If you weren’t already aware, there’s a buzzy term for our Arc’teryx-obsessed, Salomon wearing, ‘long walks in Patagonia’ mindset: Gorpcore. Coined in 2017 the phase is inspired by the expression “good ol’ raisins and peanutsâ€, a colloquial way to describe trail mix (i.e. a hiker’s snack of choice).
Since then it has become a lot more that just a phrase, and has bred a subculture of adventure loving clothing connoisseurs. They draw inspiration from brands rooted in high quality manufacturing coupled with outdoor traditions.
A Highsnobiety article interviewed a small selection of actual hikers on the subject and the consensus was surprisingly rather resentful towards the subculture. There is a bit of a disconnect between those who understand Gorpcore and those who don’t. Simply put Gorpcore is just a way of people looking to reconnect with nature in their own individual way.
