Rock Therrien’s wry, provocative paintings combine pop culture icons, luxury branding, and neon text to form bricolage works that serve as commentaries on contemporary culture. Therrien takes as his subject matter the cartoons of yesteryear, placing characters such as Donald Duck, the Smurfs, Tom and Jerry, and the Flintstones front and center in these large-scale works. He uses a combination of materials and mediums to construct these pieces, bringing together collaged, painted, and drawn elements to give his canvases textured appearances, which he heightens with his frequent use of neon lettering floating above his canvases. Therrien juxtaposes these recognizable icons of childhood with phrases that are by turns provocative and enigmatic, and places snippets of commercial branding and corporate logos in the background, making for a melange of simplicity and density, nostalgia and vulgarity.
