Antique Print — "Chefs du Tournoi" | C. Bonnard, 1860 | Plate 178 | Hand-Colored
Description
An original hand-colored engraving from Costumes Historiques des XIII, XIV et XV Siècles by French historian Charles Bonnard, published in Paris in 1860. Plate 178 depicts two Masters of the Tournament in full 15th-century ceremonial armor and heraldic dress, mounted on decorated warhorses. One knight is draped in ermine-patterned cloth, the other in royal blue adorned with gold fleurs-de-lis — the symbol of the French crown.
Bonnard compiled this series from medieval manuscripts and royal court records, making it one of the most respected costume history references of the 19th century. Original loose plates are increasingly hard to find.
Slim, flat brushed gold metal frame with clean lines and no ornamentation. Wide white/cream mat with the print floated or loosely set inside. The simple gold frame complements the antique subject without overpowering it. A more modern take on displaying a historical piece.
