Description

An original hand-colored engraving by John Leech (1817–1864), published in Robert Smith Surtees' Mr. Sponge's Sporting Tour, London: Bradbury, Evans & Co., 1853. The scene depicts the chaotic, comedic moment of Mr. Sponge's unexpected arrival at Farmer Springwheat's table, to the horror of Lord Scamperdale — a scene brimming with the social satire and sharp observation that defined Surtees' celebrated novels.

John Leech was a prominent British caricaturist and illustrator, best known for his work in Punch magazine, combining verbal and graphic political and social satire for a broad Victorian audience. His illustrations for Surtees remain among the most collectible Victorian sporting prints in the market.

Presented in a dark wood frame with pale blue mat.
