Key Takeaways

  • This route suits eBay business sellers who also run a shop, stall or studio on Square and want their eBay stock on their own website.
  • A Square Online store starts at £0 a month in the UK. You pay 1.4% plus 25p on UK cards, and paid plans from £20 add a custom domain at no extra cost.
  • Square Online shares one item library with your Square till, so an item sold at the counter comes off the website too.
  • FLUF sees eBay sales and drops the Square stock. A Square sale you mark sold in FLUF, which then ends the eBay listing.

Who should add Square

Square is not a marketplace. Nobody browses Square looking for your stock. What it gives an eBay seller is a website of their own, fed by the same item library as the card reader on the counter. If you sell vintage on eBay and at a Saturday market, or run a small shop and list the slow movers on eBay, a Square Online store puts everything in one place under your own name, with no final value fee on the sales it brings in.

The eBay sellers who fit are the ones already taking payments on Square in person. If you have no shop or stall, Square Online is one option among several for a website, and the shared till is the reason to pick it.

How the costs compare

eBay’s UK business fee page lists a final value fee of 11.9% in Clothes, Shoes & Accessories, with other rates by category, and eBay Shop subscriptions at £27, £77 and £437 a month. On a £60 jacket you pay about £7 to eBay before postage.

Square’s UK Square Online page lists a £0 plan with paid plans from £20 a month, and a processing fee of 1.4% plus 25p on UK cards and 2.5% plus 25p on other cards. All paid plans include a custom domain that Square values at £17.95. The same £60 jacket sold on your Square site costs £1.09 in card fees. Square’s US pricing puts online card processing at 3.3% plus 30 cents on the £0 equivalent and 2.9% plus 30 cents on Square Plus.

The saving is real, and it only counts on sales you would have made anyway. eBay brings buyers; your website does not. Most sellers who run both use the Square site for repeat customers, the market crowd and social media, and keep eBay for the search traffic.

eBay habits to change on Square

  • Do not link to your site from eBay. eBay’s listing policies restrict links that take buyers off eBay, so the website is for your own customers, not for your eBay listings.
  • One item library. Square Online and the Square till share the same items. An item sold at the counter is gone from the website, and a website sale updates the till. That is the point of the pairing.
  • You handle the shipping. eBay wraps postage into the checkout. On Square Online you set your own rates and buy your own labels.
  • Your customer data is yours. Square gives you the buyer’s email and order history on your own site. eBay does not.

How you connect Sign in with your eBay account Sign in with your Square account

In practice an eBay sale looks after itself: FLUF records it and the Square stock drops, on the website and at the till. A Square sale, online or at the counter, needs one click in FLUF, after which the eBay listing ends. For a one-off item, do it before you hand the bag over.

Getting started

  1. Connect eBay by signing in, and bring your listings into FLUF.
  2. Connect Square by signing in.
