Key Takeaways

  • This route suits Etsy makers and vintage sellers who also sell face to face at markets, fairs or a studio, and take cards with Square.
  • Square’s entry plan costs £0 a month. A Square Online store sits on the same system as the card reader, and online UK card payments cost 1.4% plus 25p.
  • Etsy UK charges £0.15 per listing, a 6.5% transaction fee and 4% plus £0.20 for payment processing.
  • FLUF sees Etsy sales and drops the Square stock. A sale at the stall or on your Square site you mark sold in FLUF, which then ends the Etsy listing.

Who this is for

You make candles, ceramics, prints or jewellery, or you sell vintage, and your year has two halves. Etsy ticks over online. Then there is the Christmas fair, the Saturday market, the open studio weekend, where you take cards on a Square reader and sell twenty pieces in a day.

The trouble starts on the Monday after. The one-off mug that sold at the fair is still live on Etsy, and someone in Leeds has just bought it. Putting your stock on Square as well as Etsy means the stall, your website and your Etsy shop all work from the same list, so a fair sale no longer leaves an Etsy listing behind.

What Square adds

Square’s UK pricing page describes its £0 plan as a way to sell in person, online, over the phone or out in the field, with no set-up or monthly fees, paying only when you take a payment. The Square Online store is part of the same system. Square says it works with any Square point of sale, so online and in-person sales are managed together.

That gives you a website of your own for the customers who met you at a fair and want to buy again. Square Online also starts at £0 a month. Paid plans start at £20 a month and include a custom domain. Online payments with UK cards cost 1.4% plus 25p, and 2.5% plus 25p with cards issued elsewhere.

What a sale costs on each

Etsy’s UK selling page lists £0.15 per listing, a 6.5% transaction fee, payment processing of 4% plus £0.20, and a 15% Offsite Ads fee when a sale comes from Etsy’s advertising. On a £25 candle sold through Etsy search, that comes to about £2.98.

The same candle bought on your Square Online store with a UK card costs 60p in processing. The gap is real. The catch is that Etsy found that buyer and your website did not, so the sensible split is Etsy for new customers and Square for people who already know your work.

Etsy habits to change on Square

  • Write for people who know you. Etsy titles are built for search. On your own site, the buyer came from your stall or your Instagram, so shorter product names read better.
  • Set your own shipping. Square Online asks you to set delivery rates and options. Copy what works on Etsy and adjust.
  • Collect emails at the fair. A sign-up sheet or QR code on the stall is how your website gets its first visitors.
  • Check stock before you pack the van. Anything you take to a fair can sell twice if the online listings are still live, which is the problem FLUF solves.

An Etsy order looks after itself: FLUF records it and the Square stock drops, on the reader and on the website. Anything sold on the reader or through your Square site takes one click in FLUF to close the Etsy listing. On a busy fair day, do your one-off pieces between customers and the rest once the fair closes.

Getting started
