Crosslist from Etsy to Mercari — No Eligibility Wall, but a Possession Wall
Mercari will take handmade. What it will not take is anything you have not made yet, anything digital, and anything with variants. The fee shape flips and the total barely moves. Or sell on both across 44 channels.
- There is no eligibility wall going this way — there is a possession wall. Mercari does not care whether you made it, but it prohibits “listing items not in your possession, shipping from a third party or stating the item will be shipped at a future date”. That single rule blocks made-to-order, personalised, pre-order, print-on-demand and dropshipped stock.
- Digital downloads cannot travel at all. Mercari’s prohibited-items policy names “digital items — any items where the order is fulfilled electronically or requires a download”.
- One listing, one item. Mercari has no variations and no multi-quantity, and removes duplicate listings of the same item. An Etsy listing with twelve variants becomes twelve Mercari listings.
- The fee shape flips, the fee size barely moves. On a $30 item with $6 postage the seller nets $26.40 on Mercari against $26.13 on Etsy. The real Etsy difference is the $0.20 you pay every four months on stock that has not sold, and Offsite Ads.
- Mercari is the United States only. It cannot accept a payment method issued outside the US, and payout needs a US checking account in your name. A non-US Etsy shop cannot use this route at all.
- Mercari is built to walk your price down. Smart Pricing adjusts the listing toward a floor you set, and three of its growth levers are price cuts.
- Cost: £1 for 7 days, then plans from £9/month (Starter). There is no free plan.

The possession rule, and what it quietly kills
If you have read anything about moving stock the other way — Mercari to Etsy — you will know the story is Etsy’s Creativity Standards, which shut out most resale. Going this direction, that wall does not exist. Mercari imposes no origin test at all: its Marketplace Guidelines simply require that items be legal to sell and legal to ship, and that you own the item before selling it. There is a Handmade category and an Arts & Crafts category. A hand-thrown mug is as welcome as a used iPhone.
So the interesting question is not whether Mercari will take your work. It is which parts of an Etsy shop have no Mercari-shaped form at all. There are three, and they are bigger than they look.
One: the possession rule. Mercari’s prohibited-conduct policy bans “listing items not in your possession, shipping from a third party or stating the item will be shipped at a future date”, and its prohibited-items policy separately bans “items not in your possession: dropshipping, advertisements or listings for objects being sought”.
Mercari does not enumerate what that catches. It does not need to. Made-to-order — the backbone of a great many Etsy shops — is by definition an item that will be shipped at a future date. So is a personalised sign you engrave after the order lands. So is print-on-demand, where a third party ships. So is a pre-order. If your Etsy shop runs on processing profiles measured in days because you make the thing after somebody buys it, that shop does not have a Mercari version. Only your finished, boxed, on-the-shelf stock does.
Two: digital is a hard no. Mercari’s prohibited-items policy names it directly: “Digital items — any items where the order is fulfilled electronically or requires a download — such as: Ebooks, PDF files, user generated content (UGC) or items for online games.” Etsy, meanwhile, supports digital listings as a first-class product with its own management flow. Whatever share of your Etsy revenue is a downloadable file, that share is not coming with you.
Three: you cannot be a shop. Mercari US is consumer-to-consumer by policy, and its prohibited-conduct rules ban “creating a UserID of a business or retail account” and “impersonating a business or other accounts in your user name or description”. Mercari Shops, the retail-storefront product, is a Japan-only service operated by a separate group company. There is no About section, no shop policies page, no production-partner disclosure, no banner. Your brand does not travel; your objects do.
None of that makes the route a bad idea. It makes it a different one. Mercari is where you liquidate finished inventory, clear seconds and samples, move supplies you over-bought, and sell the things you make in batches and keep in a box. It is not a second storefront.
One listing, one item
This is the largest practical difference between the two platforms and the one that decides how much work the route is.
Etsy supports variations properly. Up to three variation attributes on a listing, with Etsy’s published ceilings of 2,500 option combinations for three variation types or 4,900 for one or two, and unique prices, SKUs and quantities for up to 400 combinations. One listing can be a t-shirt in five sizes and four colours.
Mercari has none of that. Its rule is short: “Each listing must represent an item that is available for purchase. Multiple listings for the same item will be removed.” Prohibited conduct separately bans “creating multiple listings of the same item” and “excessive reposting of previously listed items”. There is no variation support and no quantity field. The only grouping mechanism is a bundle listing — several items sold together as one lot.
Follow that through. An Etsy listing with twelve variants becomes twelve Mercari listings, each needing its own photographs, its own weight and its own condition. Worse, if two of those variants are physically identical stock — forty of the same enamel pin — there is no compliant way to represent them at all. One listing is all you may have live, and you relist after each sale, carefully, because excessive reposting is itself against the rules.
The honest guidance: crosslist one-of-a-kind and small-batch items. Leave deep, variant-heavy inventory on Etsy where the platform is designed for it.
The fee shape flips and the total barely moves
First, a correction, because the internet is full of the old number. Mercari removed seller fees in March 2024 and reversed that on 6 January 2025. Sellers pay 10% again. The 2.9% plus $0.50 payment-processing fee that people still quote is also gone — there is no seller processing fee at all now.
| Component | Etsy (US shop) | Mercari (US) |
|---|---|---|
| Listing | $0.20 per listing, charged whether or not it sells, expiring after four months and auto-renewing at $0.20 | Free. “Listing an item is always free on Mercari.” |
| Seller commission | 6.5% of the price you display plus what you charge for postage and gift wrapping | 10% of the item price plus buyer-paid postage |
| Payment processing | 3% + $0.25, on the total including tax and postage | None since 6 January 2025 |
| Buyer-side fee | None | Buyer Protection fee of 3.6% of item plus buyer-paid postage |
| Advertising | Offsite Ads at 15%, or 12% once the shop has made $10,000 in the prior 365 days — compulsory from that point, for the shop’s lifetime, capped at $100 per order | No advertising fee |
| Subscription | Etsy Plus at $10 a month, optional | None |
| Faster payout | Instant transfer available to eligible US sellers, fee shown at transfer | Instant Pay at $3 flat, once a day, capped at $600 a month |
Now the arithmetic, which is the interesting part. Take a $30 item with $6 of postage charged to the buyer, and assume the label really costs $6.
| Line | Etsy | Mercari |
|---|---|---|
| Item plus postage | $36.00 | $36.00 |
| Commission | 6.5% × $36.00 = −$2.34 | 10% × $36.00 = −$3.60 |
| Payment processing | 3% × $36.00 + $0.25 = −$1.33 | — |
| Listing fee | −$0.20 | — |
| Postage label | −$6.00 | −$6.00 (the buyer paid it at checkout) |
| Seller nets | $26.13 | $26.40 |
| Buyer pays | $36.00 plus tax | $37.30 plus tax |
| If the Etsy sale came via Offsite Ads | −$5.40 at 15%, netting $20.73; −$4.32 at 12%, netting $21.81 | Not applicable |
Twenty-seven cents. On a plain, un-advertised order the two platforms take almost exactly the same amount from the seller — they just take it from different places, and Mercari’s buyer pays $1.30 more for the privilege.
Where the two genuinely diverge is not the sale, it is everything around it. Etsy charges $0.20 for the right to have a listing exist, and again every four months. A shop with 400 slow-moving listings pays $320 a year before anything sells. Mercari charges nothing for a listing that sits. And Offsite Ads is the other divergence: below $10,000 in trailing-year sales you can opt out, at $10,000 you cannot, and Etsy is explicit that if you opted out beforehand you will be required to participate at 12% on attributed orders for the lifetime of the shop.
Mercari is the United States, full stop
Say this early to your own plans, because it is absolute. Mercari states that it “can’t accept payment methods which were issued outside of the United States”, and getting paid requires a US checking account in your own name, or a US-eligible debit card plus government ID.
Mercari’s UK operation launched in March 2017 and closed in January 2019 — the last day to buy or sell was 15 January 2019, and the company’s UK entity went through insolvency proceedings. Mercari Japan is a separate operation with its own app. The Mercari Global App that launched in the US on 17 June 2026 lets US buyers shop Japanese inventory; it does not let non-US sellers list on Mercari US.
Etsy is global, and per its own annual filing 74% of its 2025 merchandise sales came from US buyers with 26% from outside. If your Etsy shop’s bank account is outside the United States, Mercari is closed to you regardless of what you sell.
What an Etsy listing carries that Mercari has no home for
| Etsy field | Mercari | Transfer |
|---|---|---|
| Title, description | Title, description | Rewrite. Mercari asks sellers not to add “a bunch of brand names and hashtags that aren’t associated with the item”, so trim the SEO tail. |
| Photos (up to 10) | Photos (up to 12) | Direct, with room to spare. Mercari notes the first photo is the first thing shoppers see. |
| Category | Category | Mapped. |
| Price | Price | Reprice rather than copy — different fee stack, different buyer expectation. |
| — | Condition: New, Like New, Good, Fair or Poor | New field. Etsy has no condition for handmade goods; you have to choose one. |
| — | Shipping weight | New field, and required. “We will first ask you to provide the weight of the item.” |
| Variations (up to 3 attributes) | None | Split into separate listings, or do not crosslist. |
| Quantity | None | No equivalent. One listing, one item. |
| Digital file attachment | Prohibited | Does not travel. |
| Materials | None | Flatten into the description. |
| Who made it / when it was made | None | Flatten into the description. |
| Production partner disclosure | None | No equivalent, and no rule requiring it. |
| Personalisation field | None — and personalised made-to-order is blocked by the possession rule | Does not travel. |
| Processing profile | None — ship within 3 business days | Does not travel. |
Mercari’s five condition values are published with definitions, and they are worth reading before you pick one out of habit. New is “completely unused” with original tags, sealed packaging or original manufacturer condition. Like new is “used very lightly or not at all”, without tags, free from noticeable damage. Good is “gently used” with “a few minor flaws”. Fair is “well-used” with “multiple visible signs of wear or defects”. Poor is heavily worn, possibly parts-only, and Mercari notes it is sold as-is with returns generally not accepted.
For a maker, most stock is New — a mug you threw last month has never been used. For anyone clearing seconds or samples, be honest and use Good, because Poor strips the buyer’s return rights and invites a dispute you will lose.
Built to walk your price down
Etsy’s own Q2 2026 shareholder letter says average order value was the largest contributor to its merchandise growth, with higher listing prices the prevailing driver, and argues that “handmade is a point of differentiation to lean into”. That is a company saying its strategy is higher prices for distinctive goods.
Mercari’s own product design says something different. Its consumer page title is “your go-to marketplace for deals on used & secondhand items”. It has five used-condition grades. And it ships a tool called Smart Pricing whose stated behaviour is: “set your listing’s price and a floor price. We’ll gradually adjust the price based on market demand, but never lower than your floor.” The floor stays private, and the listing is re-promoted each time the price drops.
We are not going to claim an average-order-value gap, because neither company publishes one for a like-for-like comparison. But you do not need a statistic to read two product designs pointing in opposite directions. Price your Mercari listings for a deal-driven, search-led buyer, and set the Smart Pricing floor deliberately rather than accepting a default — because the tool’s entire job is to move away from your asking price.
Shipping and payouts
Mercari’s label system is genuinely good and quite different from Etsy’s. Prepaid labels through USPS, UPS and FedEx, with tracking, at fixed rates across the fifty states. You choose per listing whether the buyer pays at checkout or you absorb the cost from your proceeds — and note that the 10% seller fee and the 3.6% buyer fee are both charged on item price plus buyer-paid postage, so passing postage to the buyer is not a way around the fee.
Limits worth knowing: packages up to 50 lbs actual or dimensional weight, longest side 34 inches, second-longest 20 inches, with no service to US territories or military addresses and no FedEx or UPS to Hawaii or Alaska. Best-rate pricing applies to packages of one cubic foot or less with a longest side of 22 inches or less; anything bigger falls to standard pricing. Shipping Protection covers up to $200 on standard prepaid labels and $20 on a First-Class Envelope label, and shipping on your own is not covered at all. Dispatch is within three business days.
Etsy, by contrast, sells discounted USPS, FedEx and Global Postal labels to US shops, and you pay for them — the cost is charged to your Etsy payment account.
Payouts differ in a way that will feel strange at first. Mercari holds your money until the buyer rates the order; if they do not, Mercari auto-rates at five stars after three days and the transaction completes. Direct deposit is free, processed the next business day, and takes up to five business days to land, with a $2 non-refundable fee only when a deposit fails. Instant Pay is $3 a time, once a day, capped at $600 a month.
Etsy pays on a schedule — new sellers default to weekly, every Monday — but new sellers also face funds being eligible only 14 days after a sale, and a payment account reserve that holds back a percentage of each new physical-item sale until you have a track record, typically removed within 90 days.
On tax, both platforms publish the same current federal position: a 1099-K is issued only where gross payments exceed $20,000 and transactions exceed 200. The $600 threshold was repealed and the IRS confirmed the reversion in October 2025. Some states set lower thresholds. Mercari collects a W-9 at or approaching the threshold and may limit your ability to sell without it.
How to crosslist with FLUF Connect
- Check the geography first. US bank account, US-issued payment method. If your Etsy shop is not American, stop here.
- Connect Etsy and import your listings, photos and prices into one catalogue.
- Filter to what you are holding. Finished, boxed, in-hand stock only. Exclude every made-to-order, personalised, pre-order and print-on-demand listing, and every digital file.
- Exclude your deep variant listings too, or accept that each variant becomes its own Mercari listing with its own photos and weight.
- Connect Mercari and set weights as you go — it is a required field and there is no way to skip it.
- Pick conditions honestly from Mercari’s five, and set Smart Pricing floors rather than leaving them to default.
- Push, then run both from one dashboard, so a sale on either side is one action rather than two logins.
What syncs between them
| Event | What happens |
|---|---|
| An order lands on Etsy | Etsy order sync brings it into FLUF Connect and the item is marked sold so it stops being offered elsewhere. |
| An order lands on Mercari | Mercari order sync does the same, and sold status flows back out. |
| An item sells somewhere else entirely | Mark-as-sold is supported on both sides, so the item can be pulled from whichever did not sell it. |
| An Etsy listing hits its four-month expiry | Relisting is supported on Etsy and included in every plan. Mercari listings have no expiry. |
| You edit a price | Change it once. Remember Mercari’s Smart Pricing may move it again on its own. |
Because Mercari is strictly one listing per item, closing promptly matters more here than on most routes. An oversell on Mercari is a cancellation, and cancellations sit on an account that is already governed by a duplicate-listing rule.
What it costs
FLUF Connect is £1 for 7 days, then plans from £9/month on Starter, with no cap on how much you list. There is no free plan.
Relisting, offers and bulk operations are included in every plan rather than sold as add-ons. The one that pays for itself on this route is relisting, because Etsy’s four-month clock is the only recurring cost either platform charges you for simply having stock.

That includes Mercari’s title and description character limits, any Mercari direct-deposit minimum, any Mercari US merchandise volume, average order value or user count, and Etsy’s shop set-up fee amount and instant-transfer fee. Mercari’s own pages also disagree on a maximum package weight — one says 50 lbs and another 100 — so we have used the 50 lb figure and flagged the conflict rather than picking silently.

Frequently Asked Questions
No — that wall runs the other way. Mercari imposes no origin test at all; it has a Handmade category and its guidelines only require that items be legal to sell and ship and that you own them. What blocks an Etsy shop is different: Mercari prohibits listing items not in your possession or shipped at a future date, which rules out made-to-order, personalised, pre-order, print-on-demand and dropshipped stock.
No. Mercari's prohibited-items policy names digital items directly — “any items where the order is fulfilled electronically or requires a download”, giving ebooks, PDFs and user-generated content as examples. Whatever share of your Etsy revenue is a downloadable file stays on Etsy.
No, and this is the biggest practical difference. Etsy allows up to three variation types on one listing, with unique prices, SKUs and quantities for up to 400 combinations. Mercari's rule is that each listing must represent one item available for purchase, and multiple listings of the same item are removed. An Etsy listing with twelve variants becomes twelve Mercari listings, each needing its own photos, weight and condition.
On a plain order, almost exactly the same. Take a $30 item with $6 postage: on Etsy you net $26.13 after the 6.5% transaction fee, 3% plus $0.25 processing and the $0.20 listing fee; on Mercari you net $26.40 after the 10% seller fee. The buyer pays $1.30 more on Mercari because of its 3.6% Buyer Protection fee. The real divergence is elsewhere — Etsy charges $0.20 every four months for stock that has not sold, and Offsite Ads at 15% or 12%.
Not any more. Mercari removed seller fees in March 2024 and reversed that on 6 January 2025. Sellers now pay 10% of the item price plus buyer-paid postage. The separate 2.9% plus $0.50 payment-processing fee was removed at the same time, so there is no seller processing fee — but the 10% is real and widely misreported.
No. Mercari states it cannot accept payment methods issued outside the United States, and getting paid requires a US checking account in your own name or a US-eligible debit card with government ID. Mercari's UK operation closed in January 2019 and Mercari Japan is a separate business. If your shop banks outside the US, this route is closed regardless of what you sell.
New, in most cases — Mercari defines New as completely unused, with original tags, sealed packaging or original manufacturer condition, and a mug you threw last month has never been used. For seconds and samples use Good, which Mercari defines as “gently used” with a few minor flaws. Avoid Poor unless the item really is parts-only: Mercari notes Poor items are sold as-is with returns generally not accepted.
It has a tool for exactly that. Smart Pricing lets you set a price and a private floor, and Mercari then “gradually adjusts the price based on market demand, but never lower than your floor”, re-promoting the listing each time it drops. Set the floor deliberately rather than accepting a default, because moving away from your asking price is the tool's whole purpose.
You choose per listing — buyer-paid at checkout, or seller-paid and deducted from your proceeds. Either way it is not a way around the fee: both the 10% seller fee and the 3.6% buyer fee are charged on the item price plus buyer-paid postage. Mercari supplies prepaid USPS, UPS and FedEx labels with tracking, and dispatch is within three business days.
FLUF Connect plans start at £9/month on Starter, with Seller at £29/month and Pro at £99/month; every plan is unlimited on listings and marketplaces, and the tiers differ only by how often we check your channels for sales. There is no free plan. Relisting, offers and bulk operations are included in every plan rather than sold as add-ons.
