Crosslist from Etsy to OnBuy: A Second UK Marketplace for Etsy Businesses

Who should add OnBuy

OnBuy is a UK marketplace for businesses. Its seller terms ask every seller to confirm that it is a business, to hold a business bank account in a supported country, and to show its business name, trading and returns address and any VAT number on its shop. A hobby shop that sells a few pieces a month on Etsy will not get through the application, and would struggle to cover a monthly fee anyway.

The Etsy sellers who fit are the ones already running a small company: a craft supply shop with hundreds of lines, a gift business that sells the same mug design every week, a homeware brand that makes in batches. Those products repeat, so a shared stock count across two marketplaces makes sense. For truly one-off pieces, you will get more from another handmade-friendly marketplace than from OnBuy.

How the costs are built

Etsy has no monthly fee. Each listing costs $0.20, charged in pounds at the current rate, and a sale costs 6.5% of the item price plus postage. UK shops then pay 4% + £0.20 in payment processing on each order.

OnBuy works the other way round. The seller terms list a Monthly Subscription Fee on a rolling contract with no minimum commitment, and a Sales Fee on every sale. You pay a non-refundable application fee up front, which becomes your first month’s subscription if you are accepted. The sales fee depends on the category, and your seller control panel shows the rate for each one. Price your OnBuy listings from that rate, not from your Etsy prices.

OnBuy also charges for problems. A dispute where OnBuy thinks you broke its terms costs £6.50, a chargeback costs £14, and when you refund an order OnBuy keeps 20% of the sales fee it hands back, between £0.25 and £5 per line. None of these applies to a well-run order, but they make slow replies expensive.

Etsy habits to change on OnBuy

• Nothing extra in the parcel. OnBuy’s terms say you may not put any promotional marketing material inside the packaging. The thank-you card with your Etsy shop name on it stays out of OnBuy orders.
• Answer within 48 hours. Customer enquiries, returns and disputes must be answered through OnBuy’s seller panel within 48 hours.
• Product pages can be shared. On OnBuy you can create a product page or list against one that already exists, and other sellers can list against yours. Etsy listings belong to your shop alone.
• Keep buyers on the marketplace they came from. OnBuy forbids using its messages to steer a customer to another channel, and Etsy says a transaction started on Etsy may not be completed off Etsy.

What FLUF does on each side

In practice, an Etsy sale looks after itself: FLUF records it and the OnBuy listing comes down. An OnBuy order needs one click in FLUF, after which the Etsy listing ends. With batch stock that click is rarely urgent. On the last unit of a line, do it before you pack.

Getting started

1. Connect Etsy by signing in, and bring your listings into FLUF.
2. Once OnBuy has approved your application, connect it with your seller account details.
3. Choose the lines to send. Start with products you hold several of, or can restock quickly.
4. Check each title reads well to a general shopper, set OnBuy prices from your category’s sales fee, and publish.
