Crosslist from Gumtree to Grailed — Automatically

Gumtree is where a designer piece goes to be collected for cash. Grailed is where it gets designer money. What transfers, what you have to fill in yourself, the real fee maths, and the 2026 customs rules that decide your margin.

Key Takeaways — Gumtree to Grailed Crosslisting

  • These two do completely different jobs. Gumtree is a UK classifieds site where roughly 92% of the audience is British and the default transaction is cash on collection. Grailed is a designer and streetwear marketplace where about 69% of traffic is American and everything ships.
  • Gumtree caps its own payment rail at £250. Delivery on Gumtree, launched in late 2025, covers Clothing, Entertainment and Baby and Kids only, for items up to £250. Anything above that is still a stranger, a doorstep and a bank transfer you have to trust.
  • Grailed costs about 14% all-in for a UK seller — 9% commission at $120 and above, 6% below it with a $1.99 minimum, plus 4.99% and $0.49 international payment processing. Gumtree costs the private seller nothing.
  • Gumtree has no fashion taxonomy. No designer field, no size field, no condition field. Grailed requires all three, plus measurements. That gap is the whole job of this page.
  • The customs situation changed in 2025 and is the biggest practical risk. The US $800 de minimis exemption ended on 29 August 2025 and Grailed ships DDU by default, so your American buyer gets a duty bill at the door and you carry the liability for declaring origin and value correctly.
  • Sale detection only works one way on this pair. FLUF can take a Grailed listing down; it cannot read a sale from Gumtree, because a Gumtree ad has no order feed. Mark it sold once and the Grailed side follows.
  • Cost: £1 for 7 days, then plans from £9/month (Starter). There is no free plan.

Why move a Gumtree ad onto Grailed

Gumtree is a disposal channel. Grailed is a price-realisation channel. That single sentence explains most of what follows, and it is not a criticism of Gumtree — getting rid of a sofa fast, locally, for cash, with no fee at all, is a genuinely useful thing and Gumtree is very good at it.

It is a bad fit for a £400 designer jacket, for four structural reasons that are all documented rather than anecdotal.

The audience is local and general. Gumtree’s own published figures, from its media stats page, describe 2.2 million live listings a month of which 1.8 million are For Sale and 302,000 are Motors. Third-party measurement puts UK traffic at roughly 92% of the total. Your jacket competes for attention against cars, wardrobes and job ads, in front of people within driving distance.

There is no way for a buyer to find it by designer or size. Gumtree’s own posting walkthrough lists the fields you fill in: category, postcode, title, images, description, price, an optional paid website link, promotions and a contact method. There is no designer attribute, no size attribute and no condition attribute. A buyer looking for a size 48 Raf Simons piece cannot filter for one; they can only search text you happened to type.

The payment rail stops at £250. Gumtree added integrated checkout and delivery in late 2025, processed by Mangopay and shipped by Evri, and it is deliberately narrow: Clothing, Entertainment and Baby and Kids only, items up to £250 only. Above that ceiling — which is to say, for anything a resale buyer would call a grail — there is no escrow, no buyer protection and no shipping integration. You are back to a stranger at the door.

Ads expire and photos get deleted. Gumtree’s own pages disagree on whether a For Sale ad runs for 30 or 90 days, but both agree ads expire, there is no auto-renewal, and the only in-place renewal is a paid Bump Up. Gumtree also deletes all images from ads that have been inactive for six months or more.

Grailed inverts every one of those. It is designer-and-streetwear only, split into four curated sections — Grails for coveted luxury, Hype for streetwear drops, Sartorial for high-end classic menswear and womenswear, and Core for well-known mass-market and vintage. Designer, category, size, colour, condition and measurements are all first-class structured fields. Third-party measurement puts it at around 12.9 million visits a month with 68.7% from the United States and 3.07% from the UK — which is precisely the point of listing there from Britain.

Gumtree Grailed
What it is UK general classifieds Designer, streetwear and vintage marketplace
Audience geography Roughly 92% United Kingdom Roughly 69% United States, 3% United Kingdom
Seller cost Nothing for a private seller About 14% plus $0.49 for a UK seller shipping abroad
Buyer cost £0.70 plus 5% to 10% Buyer Protection where delivery applies No buyer fee; buyer pays shipping and, on US imports, duty
Fashion fields None — free-text title and description Designer, category, size, colour, condition, measurements
Transaction Cash on collection by default; escrowed delivery in three categories up to £250 Escrowed, shipped, with Purchase Protection
Listing lifespan Expires; renewal is a paid Bump Up No expiry; bump once every 7 days in the first 30, then requires a 10% price drop

The two are complements rather than alternatives. Keep the Gumtree ad for the local buyer who will pay cash today and save you a courier. Add Grailed to reach the buyer who will pay the designer price.

What Grailed will actually accept

This section exists because pushing an unfiltered Gumtree wardrobe to Grailed is a good way to collect deletions.

Grailed’s Listing FAQ is unusually blunt about its discretion: a listing may be deleted because it did not meet Grailed’s requirements due to the item’s condition, quality, brand, age of the listing, lack of desirability or other determining factors established by its moderation team, and it notes that custom items and those without designers are also subject to removal. In practice that means:

  • The designer field is effectively mandatory. An item with no attributable brand is a removal candidate.
  • Replicas are a zero-tolerance offence. Grailed’s policy states that listings deemed inauthentic will be deleted and the seller may face temporary suspension or permanent account deletion.
  • There is a review queue. Grailed says listings put into moderation may take a few business days to appear, and that items qualifying for its digital authentication process are reviewed by authenticators who reserve the right to reject a listing for any reason.
  • You must connect a payment account before your first listing publishes.
  • Womenswear is supported. Grailed brought womenswear onto the main marketplace in October 2022, after closing its separate Heroine site, so the old advice that Grailed is menswear-only is out of date.

Worth saying plainly: Grailed’s verification is digital review of the listing’s photos and data, with human review for items it judges high-risk and machine moderation for the rest. Items are not routed through a physical authentication hub. They ship seller to buyer directly.

So the sensible push is a filtered one — the designer, streetwear and quality vintage part of your Gumtree inventory, not the whole ad list. FLUF lets you select by item rather than by channel, which is the point.

How to crosslist from Gumtree to Grailed

  1. Create a FLUF Connect account and start the £1 seven-day trial.
  2. Connect Gumtree. Gumtree has no public seller API, so it is driven through your own signed-in session using the FLUF Chrome extension on a computer.
  3. Connect Grailed. Same mechanism — your signed-in Grailed session, hosted by the extension. Set up your Grailed payment account first or listings will not publish.
  4. Import your Gumtree ads. FLUF pulls titles, descriptions, photos and prices into one catalogue.
  5. Fill the gaps. This is the real work on this pair, and there is no way around it: Gumtree holds no designer, size or condition data, so those fields have to be supplied once, in FLUF, before the item can go to Grailed. Do it once and it applies to every future channel too.
  6. Select and crosslist. Pick the items that belong on Grailed and push them. Expect a short moderation delay on anything Grailed routes to review.
  7. Set your shipping. As a UK seller you buy your own label — see the customs section below, because this is where the money leaks.

What transfers, field by field

Gumtree field Grailed field Status Notes
Ad title Title Automatic Gumtree titles are written for a local browse. Grailed titles are searched by designer and model, so a rewrite usually pays for itself.
Description Description Automatic Strip the collection-only and cash-on-pickup language, which does not apply and reads badly to a US buyer.
Photos Photos Automatic Gumtree allows up to 9 images per ad, so there is rarely a shortfall. Note that Gumtree deletes images from ads inactive for six months, so import before an ad goes stale.
Price Price Converted Gumtree is GBP only and will not even accept a non-UK-registered card. Grailed prices in USD, and its fee tier boundary sits at $120, so the conversion decides which commission rate you pay.
Category Category Smart mapped Gumtree category slugs are granular enough to map from, for example mens-coats-jackets.
Designer Manual input No Gumtree equivalent. Required in practice; items without a designer are subject to removal.
Size Manual input No Gumtree equivalent, and Grailed buyers filter on it.
Condition Manual input, then mapped Grailed offers exactly four values: New/Never Worn, Gently Used, Used, Very Worn.
Colour Manual input Structured attribute on Grailed.
Measurements Manual input Grailed’s own seller guidance ties measurements directly to your Account Health: what a buyer sees should be what they receive.
Location and postcode Not transferred Irrelevant on a shipped marketplace.
Collection-only flag Not transferred Grailed has no local pickup concept.

Four of the ten rows above are manual input. That is unusually many, and it is honest to say so rather than pretend a classifieds ad contains marketplace-grade data. What FLUF changes is that you supply it once, against the product, rather than once per destination channel.

The fee arithmetic on a real jacket

Grailed restructured its commission on 20 May 2026 and a lot of published advice has not caught up. The current position, from Grailed’s own fees page:

  • 9% seller commission on sales of $120 and above.
  • 6% seller commission, minimum $1.99, on sales under $120.
  • Commission is charged on the listing price plus the shipping you charge, unless you use a Grailed Label — which a UK seller cannot.
  • Payment processing on top: 4.99% and $0.49 for an international transaction where you are onboarded with Stripe, or 5.49% and $0.99 if you are in a Stripe-eligible country but have not onboarded.
  • Buyers pay Grailed nothing. They pay shipping, and on a US import they now pay duty.

Note that one Grailed help page still states a flat 9% across the board for international sellers. Grailed’s own fees page contradicts it, and the fees page is the authority. Anything you read describing Grailed as a flat 9% predates 20 May 2026.

Worked example. A jacket you had listed on Gumtree at £320, priced on Grailed at $420, with $35 of shipping charged to the buyer.

  • Commission: 9% of $455 = $40.95
  • Processing: 4.99% of $455 = $22.70, plus $0.49 = $23.19
  • Total Grailed cost: $64.14, about 15.3% of the item price
  • You then pay for the actual label out of the $35 you charged.

On Gumtree the same jacket costs you nothing in fees — but it is above the £250 delivery ceiling, so there is no Gumtree checkout, no protection, and the buyer pool is people who will drive to you.

That is the trade in one line: about 15% and a courier, in exchange for a designer-only audience that is two thirds American, against 0% and a local buyer who may or may not turn up.

One small win for lower-value stock: the new 6% tier under $120 means a £60 pair of trainers now costs about 11% all in rather than 14%, which is exactly the band where a lot of Gumtree clothing sits.

Shipping and customs from the UK

This is the section most guides skip and the one that costs real money.

You cannot use a Grailed Label. Grailed states that its labels cover shipments within the US and Puerto Rico, plus Canada-to-US listings under $750 and 20 pounds, and that sellers outside the US and Canada purchase their own label and ship with the carrier of their choice. So as a UK seller you buy the label, complete the customs form, add tracking manually, and ship within 7 calendar days of purchase or the order can be cancelled under Grailed’s Code of Conduct.

The US de minimis exemption is gone. The $800 threshold that used to let a jacket enter the United States duty-free ended on 29 August 2025, and US Customs moved the suspension into indefinite regulation on 24 June 2026 for all modes other than the international postal network. The UK government’s own export guidance confirms the position for British exporters and notes a 10% reciprocal tariff on UK-origin goods — which stacks with other rates, and is set by country of manufacture, not country of shipment. A UK seller shipping an Italian-made coat is on a different rate from the UK 10%.

The default is that your buyer pays it, and you carry the liability for getting it right. Grailed’s own tariffs guidance says buyers are responsible for all tariffs, duties and carrier clearance fees after checkout, and that sellers are responsible for providing the correct country of origin and declaring accurate value — with the explicit warning that incorrect information can make the seller responsible for refunding the buyer’s duties, and that payouts may be cancelled or funds taken back.

Two practical consequences worth planning for. First, a US buyer receiving an unexpected door charge is a dispute waiting to happen, so say in the description that duties are payable on delivery. Second, Grailed runs an opt-in Seller-Paid Duties Program that puts a badge on the listing and requires prepayment on a delivered-duty-paid basis; if you enrol and then fail to prepay, Grailed reimburses the buyer and debits your account for the full amount plus fees.

For shipments to other destinations, Grailed publishes tax identifiers that you put on the customs form: IOSS IM3720016521 for the EU, VOEC 2079143 for Norway, IRD 136-842-102 for New Zealand and an Australian GST number, with the customs code marked as paid.

What syncs, and the one thing that does not

Be clear-eyed about this pair, because it is asymmetric.

Event What happens
Item sells on Grailed FLUF detects the sale and marks the item sold in your catalogue.
Item sells on Gumtree Not detected automatically. A Gumtree ad is a classified with no order feed, so there is nothing for FLUF to read. Mark it sold in FLUF and the Grailed listing comes down.
Removing the Gumtree ad Manual, in Gumtree. FLUF does not delist Gumtree ads.
Price or description edits in FLUF Pushed to Grailed.
Automated relisting Not available on either channel. Gumtree renewal is a paid Bump Up; Grailed listings do not expire but bumping is rate-limited.
Offer management Not automated on either channel.

That asymmetry is a real limitation and it shapes the sensible workflow: treat Grailed as the system of record for anything you have crosslisted, and when a local Gumtree buyer takes something off your hands, spend the five seconds to mark it sold. The alternative is selling the same jacket twice, and on Grailed a cancelled order feeds your Account Health score, which is assessed over a trailing ninety days on order success and policy standing, into bands from Excellent down to Restricted.

One further Grailed mechanic worth knowing before you plan a strategy of constant bumping: a listing can be bumped once every seven days within its first thirty days, and after thirty days a bump requires dropping the price by at least 10%.

Before and after

Before. Photograph the jacket. Post the Gumtree ad. Field a fortnight of messages, most of which are lowball offers or people who will not turn up. Watch the ad expire. Pay £1.49 to bump it. Eventually decide to try Grailed, and start again from scratch: re-upload the photos, look up the designer’s exact spelling, measure the garment, pick a condition, price in dollars, work out the shipping, read up on customs.

After. Import the Gumtree ad once. Add designer, size, condition and measurements against the product. Push to Grailed. Keep the local ad running for the buyer who wants to collect. Mark it sold in one place when either side takes it.

The time saving is real but it is not the main thing. The main thing is that the item is now visible to a designer-buying audience of about 12.9 million monthly visits, most of them American, instead of only to people within collection distance who are mostly shopping for furniture.

What sellers report on both sides

On Gumtree, the consistent theme is that interest evaporates. A March 2026 thread asked whether anyone still sells there; the poster’s clothing bundle buyer went and bought the same thing on Vinted instead, and the poster concluded they would take the Gumtree listing down. An earlier thread titled bluntly on the same subject collected replies about dozens of adverts, thirty-plus messages and every one being some form of scam, with several people saying Facebook Marketplace reaches buyers faster. And the classic failure mode is still live: an August 2026 thread describes a face-to-face Gumtree sale where the promised bank transfer never arrived and the buyer went silent.

On Grailed, the recurring complaint is cost, and it is usually overstated. Threads titled around losing 30% of a sale are describing commission, payment processing and shipping compounding together, not the commission alone. The more interesting recent threads are all about the border: in August 2026 alone the Grailed community was arguing about fees from the US to the EU, about buyers refusing to pay import duties, and about a returned item where a local post office demanded several hundred dollars in customs. That is not a Grailed problem so much as a 2026 problem, but it lands on cross-border sellers first.

There is also a genuinely useful signal in a lower-key thread from 24 August 2026 asking why a seller paid a lower fee than expected — consistent with the new 6% sub-$120 tier reaching sellers in the wild.

The honest summary: Grailed will take about 15% and hand you a customs form, and it is still the channel where a designer piece gets designer money. Gumtree will take nothing and hand you a stranger.

What it costs

FLUF Connect is £1 for 7 days, then plans from £9/month on Starter. Seller is £29/month and Pro is £99/month; every plan is unlimited on listings and marketplaces, and the tiers differ by how often we check your channels for sales. There is no free plan. Crosslisting, inventory sync, automated relisting and offer management are included on every plan rather than sold as extras, on the channels that support them. Full detail on pricing.

Gumtree charges private sellers nothing to list, and Grailed charges nothing to list either — its fees land only when an item sells. So the subscription is the only fixed cost of running both.

Sources and verification

Gumtree does not publish title or description character limits, current promotion prices, or any category-level sales data, so none are quoted here. Gumtree’s own pages give conflicting figures for For Sale ad duration — 30 days on one, 90 on another — and both are cited rather than averaged. Gumtree’s published traffic statistics date from 2021 and are the newest official figures available. Traffic splits from Similarweb are third-party estimates, not audited figures. Community quotes are individual experiences, not measured data. Grailed’s own help centre contains a stale page stating a flat 9% commission; the fees page supersedes it. Fees and customs rules are current as of August 2026 and both changed materially during 2025 and 2026, so older guides are unreliable. Gumtree UK is a separate business from Gumtree Australia and Gumtree South Africa, with no shared account, and only the UK site is described on this page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Grailed accepts sellers internationally, but you cannot use a Grailed Label — those cover shipments inside the US and Puerto Rico plus Canada to US listings under 750 dollars. As a UK seller you buy your own label, complete the customs form yourself, add tracking manually, and ship within 7 calendar days of purchase or the order can be cancelled.

Commission is 9% on sales of 120 dollars and above and 6% below that with a 1.99 dollar minimum, changed on 20 May 2026. Payment processing for an international transaction adds 4.99% plus 49 cents if you are onboarded with Stripe. That is roughly 14 to 15% all in, charged on the item price plus the shipping you charge, because you cannot use a Grailed Label.

No. Private sellers pay no listing fee and no final value fee on Gumtree. Gumtree charges the buyer a Buyer Protection fee of 70 pence plus 5 to 10% where its integrated delivery applies, and it charges sellers for optional promotions such as Bump Up and Featured Ad.

Delivery on Gumtree, its integrated checkout and shipping product, is deliberately narrow. It covers Clothing, Entertainment and Baby and Kids only, and items up to 250 pounds. Anything above that has no Gumtree payment rail at all, so it is cash on collection with no escrow and no buyer protection — which is exactly the price band where designer resale lives.

Designer, size, condition, colour and measurements. A Gumtree ad is a free-text title and description with no fashion attributes, and Grailed requires all of those as structured fields. FLUF lets you supply them once against the product rather than once per destination channel.

Four: New/Never Worn, Gently Used, Used and Very Worn. Grailed ties condition and measurements directly to your Account Health score, which is assessed over a trailing ninety days, so grading generously is expensive rather than clever.

No, and this is the honest limitation on this pair. A Gumtree ad has no order feed, so FLUF cannot read a sale from Gumtree and does not delist Gumtree ads. It works the other way round: mark the item sold in FLUF and the Grailed listing comes down. Treat Gumtree as the manual side.

Your buyer, by default. The US 800 dollar de minimis exemption ended on 29 August 2025 and Grailed ships on a delivered-duty-unpaid basis, so the buyer is billed at delivery. But the seller carries the liability for declaring country of origin and value correctly, and Grailed warns that incorrect information can make you responsible for refunding the duty, with payouts cancelled or funds taken back.

No. Grailed is designer, streetwear and quality vintage only, and its Listing FAQ says a listing can be deleted for condition, quality, brand, age of listing, lack of desirability or other factors set by its moderation team, and that items without a designer are subject to removal. Replicas carry a zero-tolerance policy. Push a filtered selection, not the whole ad list.

FLUF Connect is 1 pound for 7 days, then plans from 9 pounds a month on Starter. There is no free plan. Neither Gumtree nor Grailed charges to create a listing, so the subscription is the only fixed cost of running both.
