Crosslist from willhaben to Kleinanzeigen — Automatically
Same language, one border, and two payment systems that refuse to cross it. Here is what actually transfers from an Austrian willhaben ad to a German Kleinanzeigen one.
- Both platforms’ payment and shipping products stop dead at the border, and both say so in writing. willhaben: PayLivery “kann ausschließlich für Verkäufe im österreichischen Inland verwendet werden”. Kleinanzeigen: “Der Versand mit ‚Sicher bezahlen‘ (inkl. Käuferschutz) gilt nur innerhalb von Deutschland.”
- Kleinanzeigen’s location field is Germany-only, and it is demonstrably so. Its own place-autocomplete returns
Deutschlandas the root and no Austrian town or postcode at all — searching “Wien” returns Wienhausen in Lower Saxony. - So: you can register and you can list. You cannot be located in Austria, and you cannot use the rails. You sell as “Andere Versandmethode”, buy your own cross-border label and enter the tracking by hand.
- For a fashion seller Kleinanzeigen is effectively free — 100 new ads per rolling 30 days at no charge, then €1.99 each. But deleting and re-posting an ad inside those 30 days consumes the allowance twice.
- They are no longer corporate cousins. Kleinanzeigen is still Adevinta; willhaben bought itself out of Adevinta in 2025 and is now Styria plus Sprints Capital.
- The condition scales do not map. willhaben has six values, Kleinanzeigen five, and Defekt, Generalüberholt and Ausstellungsstück have no German equivalent at all.
- Cost: £1 for 7 days, then plans from £9/month (Starter — unlimited crosslisting). There is no free plan.

The border is the story
Every other article about this route says roughly the same thing: Kleinanzeigen is free and German-speaking, so an Austrian seller should just post there too. The reality is more interesting, and both operators document it themselves.
willhaben’s PayLivery — its escrow, buyer-protection and shipping product — is Austria-only. In English: PayLivery can be used exclusively for sales within Austria, and shipping across the Austrian border via PayLivery is fundamentally not possible.
Kleinanzeigen’s equivalent stops at its own border in the same way. Its fees page states: “Wichtig: Der Versand mit ‚Sicher bezahlen‘ (inkl. Käuferschutz) gilt nur innerhalb von Deutschland.” — shipping with “Sicher bezahlen”, including buyer protection, applies only within Germany. Its list of situations where Käuferschutz does not apply includes, plainly: “Der Versand erfolgt nicht innerhalb von Deutschland.”
So the corridor is closed from both ends, deliberately, by both companies. That is not a bug you can work around with a setting. It is the defining constraint of this route, and any page that does not lead with it is going to cost you money.
One piece of context that surprises people: the two platforms are no longer corporate cousins. Kleinanzeigen dropped the eBay prefix in May 2023 and belongs to Adevinta, which Permira and Blackstone took private in 2024. willhaben went the other way — in 2025 Styria Media Group and Sprints Capital bought out Adevinta’s half, so willhaben now sits outside the group entirely. Whatever technical kinship they once had is gone.
Can an Austrian actually use Kleinanzeigen?
Yes to registering. Yes to listing. No to being located there, and no to the payment and shipping rails. Four separate findings, and three of them are hard.
Registration works. Kleinanzeigen asks for an email address, a phone number and a password. There is no address field at sign-up, and SMS verification accepts Austrian numbers.
The terms do not exclude you — they explicitly contemplate you. The Nutzungsbedingungen apply German law, and then add that for consumers resident in the EU the mandatory consumer-protection provisions of their own member state also apply, and that the same holds where a user moves abroad after signing up or has no general place of jurisdiction in Germany. Those clauses only make sense if foreign-resident users exist. Expect extra login friction, though: the terms note that logging in from abroad can trigger an additional verification code.
The location field is Germany-only, and this is the hard blocker. Kleinanzeigen’s own place-autocomplete endpoint is the cleanest proof available. Query it for “Wien” and it returns Deutschland as the root node followed by Wienhausen in Lower Saxony, Wienburg in Münster, Wiendorf and Wienrode. Query it for “1010”, the postcode for Vienna’s first district, and it returns German five-digit postcodes — 01109 Klotzsche, 10117 Mitte, 10115 Wedding. There is no Austrian place and no Austrian postcode anywhere in the gazetteer.
That matters more than it sounds, because the Umkreissuche — browsing by distance from where you are — is Kleinanzeigen’s primary discovery mechanism. An Austrian seller must pick a German town, and is then misrepresented in every local search their listing appears in.
Sellers do route around it, and the workarounds are exactly as ugly as you would expect. One Austrian buyer described entering a leading zero to force their four-digit Austrian postcode into a five-digit German field, then messaging the real address to the seller in chat.
And “Sicher bezahlen” is unreachable. Since the escrow product requires shipping inside Germany, and the DHL and Hermes labels it offers are German domestic products, an Austrian seller has to select “Andere Versandmethode”, buy their own cross-border label, and type the tracking number in manually. Kleinanzeigen’s own help page describes that path: with another shipping method you pay the postage in advance and must remember to enter the tracking number yourself.
Worth correcting a piece of folk wisdom while we are here. A widely repeated claim on German-language forums is that Austrians cannot create a Kleinanzeigen account at all. They can. What they cannot do is be located in Austria or use the platform’s rails.
What each platform costs
On willhaben, a private Marktplatz listing is free and runs for 45 days; a commercial ad runs 60. PayLivery costs the seller nothing at all — the buyer pays both the shipping and the Käuferschutz fee, which willhaben describes as “ab 1,99 € bzw. ab 4,5% vom Artikelpreis”, adding that the amount varies by category. Note the word ab: that is a floor, not a ceiling, and willhaben publishes no cap.
On Kleinanzeigen, the fee structure was rewritten across 2024–2026 and most advice online is stale. As its fees page stood on 28 August 2026: private sellers get 100 new ads per rolling 30 days free in the Konsumgüter, Services and Jobs categories, and pay €1.99 including VAT for each one beyond that. Paid ads run 60 days, and ads in these categories can be extended without limit and without charge. For a clothing or homeware seller, that is effectively free.
Vehicles are where it bites: two free car ads per 30 days below €30,000, then €9.99 each, and renewal of any car ad costs €9.99 regardless. A rule that commenced on 21 May 2026 adds that any ad priced at €45,000 or more carries a mandatory €9.99 listing fee from the very first ad, for every user type.
The counting rule that catches crosslisters is worth quoting, because it is the opposite of how most marketplaces work. Kleinanzeigen states that all ads placed within the last 30 days count, and gives its own example: if within 30 days you delete an ad twice and post it again, you use up the free allowance for that category. The delete-and-repost refresh habit is directly penalised.
Kleinanzeigen’s “Sicher bezahlen” service fee is €0.50 plus 4.5% of the purchase price, paid by the buyer — and, as established above, unavailable to you.
Neither platform publishes the price of its promotion products. willhaben’s Zusatzprodukte and Kleinanzeigen’s Hochschieben, Highlight, Top-Anzeige and Galerie all show their cost only inside the booking flow. Figures circulating online for either are third-party guesses, and we are not going to repeat them.
Field by field, including three that break
| Field | willhaben | Kleinanzeigen | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Title | No published limit; longest observed across 803 live fashion ads was 73 characters | No published limit; longest observed was 65 characters | May need truncating — and on Kleinanzeigen the title is the only field the text search indexes |
| Description | Contact details are stripped automatically | Free text | Transfers. Strip Austrian pickup references and any mention of PayLivery |
| Photos | Unlimited, 6 MB each, up to 8000×8000 | 12 MB each; jpg, gif, heic, png | Transfers. First image is the cover on both |
| Price | Fixed, or “Preis auf Anfrage” | Fixed, VB (Verhandlungsbasis), or “Zu verschenken” | Transfers, but re-price for the German market and for cross-border postage |
| Zustand | Six values: Neu, Neuwertig, Generalüberholt, Gebraucht, Defekt, Ausstellungsstück | Five: Neu mit Etikett, Neu, Sehr Gut, Gut, In Ordnung | Breaks. Only “Neu” maps cleanly. Defekt, Generalüberholt and Ausstellungsstück have no equivalent and must go into the description |
| Größe | 13 buckets, Austrian-numeric first: bis 34, 36/S, 38/S, 40/M… and they are ranges | Letter-first: XXXS (30), XXS (32), XS (34), S (36), M (38)… | Mappable, but the notation is inverted and willhaben’s buckets are ranges rather than values |
| Schuhgröße / Hosenweite | Separate structured fields | No equivalent field | Breaks. Must be written into the title or description |
| Muster | 14 values | No equivalent | Lost |
| Marke, Farbe | Long brand taxonomy; 16 colours | Long brand taxonomy; 19 colours | Mostly maps; check brand spellings |
| Art / garment type | Expressed as the subcategory | A separate Art attribute with 15 values | Must be derived |
| Übergabe | Selbstabholung / Versand flags | Versand möglich / Nur Abholung | Maps |
| Location | Austrian postcode | Germany only | Breaks. Replaced by hand |
| Payment and shipping | PayLivery, Austria only | Sicher bezahlen, Germany only | Neither transfers. Sell as “Andere Versandmethode” |
| Runtime | 45 days for a free private ad | 60 days, extendable | Two separate expiry clocks to track |
The category trees diverge too, and shoes are the sharpest case. On willhaben a pair of women’s shoes is a Damenmode ad carrying a Schuhgröße attribute. On Kleinanzeigen, Damenschuhe is a category of its own. Similarly, willhaben treats Uhren / Schmuck as a top-level category while Kleinanzeigen files Uhren & Schmuck inside Bekleidung & Accessoires. There is no clean automated mapping; every unusual item wants a human glance.
A German ad is not automatically a German-market ad
Nothing needs translating — the ad is already in German. What needs localising is vocabulary, and several Austrian words are false friends that will actively mislead a German buyer rather than merely reading oddly.
| Austrian | Means in Austria | Reads in Germany as | Use instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sessel | An ordinary chair | An armchair | Stuhl |
| Kasten | Wardrobe or cupboard | A crate of bottles | Schrank / Kleiderschrank |
| Polster | Pillow | Upholstery padding | Kissen |
| Leiberl | T-shirt | Unfamiliar | T-Shirt |
| Gewand | Clothing generally | Archaic; a robe | Kleidung |
| Häferl | Mug | Unfamiliar | Tasse / Becher |
| Jänner | January | Unfamiliar | Januar |
| Matura | School-leaving certificate | Unfamiliar | Abitur |
“Sessel” is the expensive one. List an Austrian dining chair on Kleinanzeigen as a Sessel and you will attract German buyers expecting an armchair, then spend the week explaining.
Two conventions also differ. VB, for Verhandlungsbasis, exists on both but carries far more weight on Kleinanzeigen, where haggling is the norm and there are no auctions at all. And on a Kleinanzeigen ad sold with “Andere Versandmethode” you must state the postage yourself, in euros, and say explicitly that it ships from Austria — otherwise a German buyer will assume a €5 domestic DHL parcel and object when told it is €11.
Shipping Austria to Germany, and what it really costs
Germany is Zone 1a for Österreichische Post — two days, up to 31.5 kg, and no customs declaration, since both countries are in the EU. Neither platform’s own label product covers the route, so you are buying retail.
| Size (longest plus shortest side) | GLS | DPD | Hermes |
|---|---|---|---|
| XS, up to 35 cm | €10.90 (€9.90 shop to shop) | — | — |
| S, up to 50 cm | €12.10 | €11.90 | €11.10 |
| M, up to 65–80 cm | €16.90 | €16.60 | €16.10 |
| L, up to 80–120 cm | €19.90 | €19.60 | €21.10 |
Österreichische Post’s counter prices for international parcels are markedly worse — €20.90 for up to 2 kg and €29.23 for up to 10 kg — but its online Paketmarke, priced by size rather than weight, is competitive at €12.62 for the smallest band. For flat items under 2 kg, Brief International L costs €8.45 with priority handling, though without tracking.
Here is the conclusion that surprises people: cross-border postage is not the blocker. A GLS extra-small parcel at €9.90 or a Hermes small at €11.10 is within a few euros of what a German domestic DHL medium costs a Kleinanzeigen seller. The blocker is the escrow ban, not the freight.
How to crosslist with FLUF Connect
- Connect willhaben. In FLUF Connect, add willhaben and let the index read your live ads into one catalogue.
- Connect Kleinanzeigen and set a German location on the account before you push anything. Choose one deliberately rather than accepting a default — it is the location every German buyer will judge your listing by.
- Fix the three fields that break before crosslisting: move Schuhgröße and Hosenweite into the description, and decide how Defekt, Generalüberholt and Ausstellungsstück should read for a German buyer.
- Localise the vocabulary. Sessel to Stuhl, Polster to Kissen, Jänner to Januar. Delete any PayLivery or Austrian pickup reference.
- State the postage explicitly, in euros, and say it ships from Austria.
- Crosslist, then watch the two clocks. A willhaben private ad expires at 45 days and a Kleinanzeigen ad at 60, so they will fall out of step.
What syncs between them
| Behaviour | willhaben | Kleinanzeigen |
|---|---|---|
| Automated relisting | Yes | Yes |
| Sale on this channel detected and imported | No | Yes |
| Item sells elsewhere → removed from this channel | Not currently | Yes |
| Offer management | No | No |
Read that honestly and the loop is one-sided. Kleinanzeigen sales are detected and the item is cleared from your other channels. The willhaben side does not yet report sales back, so if something sells on willhaben you take the Kleinanzeigen copy down yourself.
Given that most willhaben sales outside PayLivery are arranged in chat and settled in person, that is less of a limitation than it looks — there is often no digital event for any software to detect. But it is a real duty, and it is the one to remember on a route where the same physical item is now advertised in two countries.
One further wrinkle specific to Kleinanzeigen: because deleting and re-posting inside 30 days consumes your free allowance, do not manage a sold item by deleting and re-listing it later. Let it run or extend it.
The manual version
By hand, per item: open the willhaben ad, copy the title and truncate it to roughly 65 characters, copy the description, download the photos, log in to Kleinanzeigen and clear the extra verification code an Austrian IP tends to trigger, pick the Kleinanzeigen category — remembering that shoes and jewellery move — re-enter Art, Größe in letter notation, Farbe, Marke and Zustand on a five-value scale that does not match, write Schuhgröße, Hosenweite and Muster into the description, choose a German location, set “Andere Versandmethode” and state the postage, localise the vocabulary, and publish.
Realistically eight to fifteen minutes an item once you know the mapping. The ongoing cost is larger: two inboxes, two sets of price edits, two expiry clocks, and a manual delisting every time something sells, because neither platform knows the other exists.
One genuine finding worth stating: almost nobody discusses this route publicly. We searched the Austrian and German subreddits and found no thread about dual-listing willhaben and Kleinanzeigen. Read that as an unarticulated need rather than an absent one — there is an Austrian Trustpilot reviewer complaining that PayLivery fees are nearly double Kleinanzeigen’s and concluding that the lack of a real Austrian alternative “ist definitiv eine Marktlücke”: definitely a gap in the market.
What FLUF Connect costs
FLUF Connect is £1 for 7 days, with full access to every feature straight away. The rest of your first month is charged after the seven days, then it is £9/month on Starter. There is no free plan.
Crosslisting is unlimited on every plan — no cap on how many listings you create, how many stay live, or how many marketplaces each one reaches. Starter checks for sales every 90 minutes and holds 90 days of history. Automated relisting, offer management and smart pricing begin on the Seller plan at £29/month. Pro is £99/month and Super Seller pricing is bespoke.

Both platforms run public help centres that expose each article’s own last-updated date, so every fee and policy below is dated at source and was checked on 28 August 2026. German quotations are given in the original with an English translation.

kleinanzeigen.de/s-ort-empfehlungen.json, queried directly for Wien, Salzburg, Graz and the postcode 1010 on 28 August 2026 - Cross-border parcel pricing — GLS Austria, Hermes Austria and Österreichische Post
- Field limits, category attributes and sync capabilities — FLUF Connect’s own willhaben and Kleinanzeigen integrations, verified 28 August 2026
Two things we deliberately did not publish. Neither platform publishes the price of its promotion products — they appear only inside the logged-in booking flow — so we quote none, and every figure circulating online for either is a third-party guess. And neither publishes a title or description character limit; the 73 and 65 characters cited above are the longest values we observed across live fashion listings, which is an observation rather than a stated policy.

Frequently Asked Questions
You can register and you can list — but you cannot be located in Austria, and you cannot use the platform's payment or shipping rails. Registration needs only an email address and a phone number, and the terms explicitly contemplate users resident outside Germany. What blocks you is the location field: Kleinanzeigen's own place-autocomplete has no Austrian town or postcode in it at all. You pick a German location, sell with “Andere Versandmethode”, and arrange your own cross-border postage.
No. willhaben's help page is explicit: PayLivery “kann ausschließlich für Verkäufe im österreichischen Inland verwendet werden” — it can be used exclusively for sales within Austria — and shipping across the Austrian border via PayLivery is “grundsätzlich nicht möglich”, fundamentally not possible. There is no setting that changes this.
No. Kleinanzeigen states plainly that shipping with “Sicher bezahlen”, including buyer protection, applies only within Germany, and lists shipping that does not take place within Germany among the situations where Käuferschutz does not apply. The DHL and Hermes labels it sells are German domestic products. You sell with “Andere Versandmethode”, buy your own label and enter the tracking number by hand.
For a fashion or homeware seller, effectively nothing. Private sellers get 100 new ads per rolling 30 days free in the Konsumgüter, Services and Jobs categories, then pay €1.99 including VAT for each additional one, and ads in those categories can be extended indefinitely at no charge. Vehicles are different: two free car ads per 30 days below €30,000, then €9.99, and since 21 May 2026 any ad priced at €45,000 or more carries a €9.99 fee from the first ad.
It costs you, which is the opposite of what most sellers expect. Kleinanzeigen counts every ad you have placed in the last 30 days against your free allowance, and gives its own worked example: delete an ad twice and re-post it inside 30 days and you have used up the free limit for that category. Extend an ad rather than re-creating it.
Less than people assume, and this is not the blocker on this route. GLS is around €10.90 for an extra-small parcel or €9.90 shop-to-shop, and Hermes around €11.10 for a small one — within a few euros of what a German domestic parcel costs a Kleinanzeigen seller. Germany is Zone 1a for Österreichische Post, roughly two days, with no customs declaration since both are in the EU. The real obstacle is that neither platform's escrow product crosses the border.
Three break outright. Condition: willhaben has six values and Kleinanzeigen five, and Defekt, Generalüberholt and Ausstellungsstück have no German equivalent — they have to go into the description. Schuhgröße and Hosenweite are structured fields on willhaben with no counterpart on Kleinanzeigen. And the location must be replaced by hand. Muster is also lost, and sizes need converting from willhaben's Austrian-numeric ranges to Kleinanzeigen's letter-first scale.
Not translate it, but yes, localise it. Several Austrian words are false friends rather than merely regional. A “Sessel” is an ordinary chair in Austria and an armchair in Germany; a “Kasten” is a wardrobe in Austria and a crate of bottles in Germany; “Polster” means pillow in Austria and “Kissen” in Germany. Also change Jänner to Januar, and state your postage in euros while saying explicitly that the item ships from Austria.
Not any more. Kleinanzeigen dropped the eBay prefix in May 2023 and belongs to Adevinta, which Permira and Blackstone took private in 2024. willhaben went the other way — in 2025 Styria Media Group and Sprints Capital bought out Adevinta's fifty percent stake, so willhaben now sits outside the group entirely.
Partly. A Kleinanzeigen sale is detected and the item is cleared from your other channels. The willhaben side does not currently report sales back, so if something sells on willhaben you take the Kleinanzeigen copy down yourself. In practice most willhaben sales outside PayLivery are arranged in chat and settled in person, so there is often no digital event for any software to detect — but it is still a duty worth remembering when the same item is advertised in two countries.
