Crosslist from willhaben to Etsy — Which Seam of an Austrian Catalogue Is Even Allowed

Etsy's 20-year rule against Austria's biggest classifieds site: what travels, what does not, the fee gap from free to 6.5%, and the two things that genuinely favour an Austrian shop. Or sell on both across 44 channels.

Key Takeaways — willhaben to Etsy Crosslisting

  • Most of a willhaben catalogue cannot go on Etsy. Etsy names “resold clothing that is ready-to-use as-is, without further crafting” as not qualifying. Damenmode alone carries about 1.8 million willhaben ads. Almost none of it travels.
  • The two platforms invert on handmade. Etsy’s first-class category is things you made. willhaben pushes self-made goods out of the free private tier — its own rule is that items produced in Eigenproduktion must be posted as a commercial ad.
  • willhaben costs the seller nothing. Etsy costs on every axis. A free private willhaben ad against Etsy’s $0.20 per listing, 6.5% including postage, 4% + €0.30 processing, and 12–15% Offsite Ads that stops being optional above $10,000 a year.
  • Two things genuinely favour an Austrian Etsy shop. Austria pays no Regulatory Operating fee — France, Italy, Spain and the UK all do. And a EUR shop with a EUR bank account pays no 2.5% conversion fee.
  • PayLivery stops at the border, and Etsy sells no Austrian labels. Etsy offers shipping labels in Australia, Canada, the UK and the US. Not Austria. You become your own logistics desk.
  • DAC7 sees more of you on Etsy. willhaben reports only PayLivery transactions; every Etsy sale runs through Etsy Payments and is countable against the same 30-transaction or €2,000 threshold.
  • Cost: £1 for 7 days, then plans from £9/month (Starter). There is no free plan.

The work on this route is selection. Which ads are old enough, or craft enough, to be allowed through Etsy’s door.

On this page

Etsy’s door, and what it checks

willhaben is Austria’s largest digital marketplace — Immobilien, Autos & Motor and Jobs plus a Marktplatz that is free for private advertisers, roughly 13 million ads in August 2026 and about 12.5 million of them on the Marktplatz. It is a general classifieds site, and that generality is the problem here.

Etsy is not general. Its Seller Policy, effective 9 July 2026, states that “everything listed for sale on Etsy must be made, designed, handpicked, or sourced by a seller”, and follows it with the blunt version: “Dropshipping and reselling are not allowed on Etsy, except in the specific cases outlined in this Help article, such as craft supplies.”

The detail lives in Etsy’s Creativity Standards. The four permitted routes:

Route Etsy’s own words
Made by a seller “Physical items made by a seller by hand or using personal or computerized tools.”
Designed by a seller “Sellers’ original designs that are produced or printed by a third party or offered as a digital download.” Production partners and any AI use must be disclosed.
Handpicked by a seller “Vintage items, items from nature, and certain collections of items that a seller personally selected and curated for sale.”
Sourced by a seller “Items that enable buyer creativity, including craft and party supplies and items that are personalized with a buyer’s custom text or image.”

Vintage has a hard line: “Items that are 20+ years old, that the seller personally curated or collected” — and Etsy “may ask for additional photo documentation or information about vintage items in your shop, such as their source, age, designer, or materials”. Then come the exclusions, which are where a classifieds catalogue meets the wall. Etsy explicitly names, as not qualifying: “Resold commercially available items that are newer than 20 years old, even if the item is designed to appear vintage”; “Resold blank items that are ready to use without craft intervention, such as blank t-shirts, hats, or tumblers”; “Resold generic cooking tools or ingredients; chemical compounds; automotive/bicycle parts and repair tools; office, construction, gardening, cosmetic, or home DIY supplies”; “Electronics that can be used outside of special events”; and — the sentence that decides this page — “Resold clothing that is ready-to-use as-is, without further crafting”.

Getting it wrong does not merely mean a rejected listing. Etsy may remove listings and suspend the shop, and is explicit that “sellers remain obligated to pay any fees incurred in listing such items” and that “listing fees are non-refundable”. A bulk crosslist of ineligible stock costs money before anything is taken down.

Your categories, in German, against Etsy’s four routes

willhaben’s Marktplatz has nineteen top-level categories with German slugs. Here is the honest mapping, using willhaben’s own names.

willhaben category Etsy route Verdict
Antiquitäten / Kunst — antike Möbel & Lampen, antike Wohnaccessoires, antikes Geschirr & Besteck, antike Bücher, Antikspielzeug, antike Werkzeuge Handpicked Eligible on the 20-year test, and this is the strongest seam in the whole catalogue. Move it first.
Sammelobjekte, Münzen, Medaillen & Pokale Handpicked Eligible on age. Check Etsy’s own prohibited-items rules for coins and currency separately.
Basteln / Handarbeit, and Schreibwaren / Malen Sourced Eligible at any age if it is a genuine craft supply. Etsy’s allow-list is concrete: paper crafts, textile crafts, jewellery-making, wood, candle and soap making, leather-working, clay, printmaking, resin, floral, millinery, craft machines.
Bücher, Sachbücher, Kinder- und Jugendbücher Handpicked or Sourced Eligible either as 20+ years old, or — at any age — as a craft book. Etsy allows “new or vintage books with instructions for crafting projects”.
Musik — Schallplatten Handpicked Eligible if the pressing itself is 20+ years old. A 2019 repress is not.
Modellbau Sourced or Handpicked Kits and materials yes. A commercial model assembled per the manufacturer’s instructions is explicitly excluded.
Musikinstrumente / Noten Handpicked only A vintage instrument travels. A current-production guitar is a resale and does not.
Wohnen — Sofas & Sessel, Tische, Regale, Lampen (vintage) Handpicked Eligible at 20+ years. Note Etsy separately excludes “plain furniture” from the party-supplies route.
Geschenkartikel / Saisonales / Feste Sourced Eligible where the item is decor designed for a specific celebration. Generic seasonal decor is excluded.
Mode / Accessoires — Damenmode, Herrenmode, Taschen & Koffer (modern) None Does not travel. This is the largest surface on willhaben and Etsy names it directly. Only genuinely 20+-year-old garments qualify.
Smartphones / Telefonie, Computer / Software, Kameras / TV / Multimedia, Games / Konsolen None Does not travel. “Electronics that can be used outside of special events.”
Baby / Kind, Spielen / Spielzeug (modern) None Does not travel unless genuinely 20+ years old.
Wohnen — Haushaltsgeräte, Küchengeräte, Geschirr & Gläser (modern) None Does not travel. “Resold generic cooking tools”, “generic tableware”.
KFZ-Zubehör / Motorradteile None Does not travel. Named directly.
Haus / Garten / Werkstatt None Does not travel. Etsy allows soil, compost, fertiliser and seeds as craft supplies but excludes gardening tools by name.
Beauty, Sport / Sportgeräte, Tiere / Tierbedarf, Dienstleistungen None Does not travel. Cosmetic tools and supplies are excluded by name, and Etsy requires every listing to offer an item for sale, which rules out services outright.

Damenmode on its own is about 1.8 million live willhaben ads — larger than the entire Antiquitäten, Bücher and Basteln surface put together. For most willhaben sellers this route is a filter, not a mirror.

One field willhaben does not carry is the one Etsy cares about most: a year of manufacture. Nothing in a willhaben ad tells you whether the Ottomane is from 1974 or 2014. The age claim has to be made at crosslist time, by a person, item by item — and it has to be defensible, because Etsy can ask for the evidence.

The handmade inversion

This is the part most sellers do not see coming, and it is the most interesting thing about the pair.

Etsy’s most valuable, most protected category is things you made yourself. willhaben treats the same goods as a signal that you are trading commercially. Its own guidance says that items produced in Eigenproduktion — and it gives the examples of self-sewn face masks, biscuits, knitted and crocheted goods — must go up as a Gewerbliche Anzeige rather than a free private ad.

So a maker who knits and sells has been nudged by willhaben’s own rules into the commercial tier or out of willhaben altogether — and their willhaben catalogue is smallest precisely where their Etsy opportunity is largest. If that is you, this is less a crosslisting question than a relocation: handmade work belongs on Etsy under “made by a seller”, and willhaben stays for clearing out the flat.

Free against a fee on every axis

willhaben’s Marktplatz costs a private seller nothing. A free private ad runs 45 days with unlimited images, and PayLivery is “für die:den Verkäufer:in… völlig kostenlos”. The buyer pays the postage and the protection fee, from €1.99 or 4.5% depending on category. willhaben’s summary of the seller’s position: “Der angebotene Preis ist das Geld, das du schlussendlich auch überwiesen bekommst” — the price offered is the money you receive. Etsy is the opposite arrangement.

Component willhaben (private Marktplatz) Etsy (Austrian shop)
Listing Free, 45 days, unlimited images $0.20 per listing, charged whether or not it sells, expiring after four months and auto-renewing at $0.20
Commission on a sale None 6.5% of the item price plus what you charge for postage and gift wrapping
Payment processing None — PayLivery is free to the seller 4% + €0.30 per order, on the total including tax and postage
VAT on the platform’s fees Not applicable Austrian USt is charged on Etsy’s seller fees unless you file a VAT ID with Etsy
Regulatory Operating fee None None for Austria — see below
Currency conversion Not applicable 2.5%, unless your shop currency matches your bank currency
Advertising Optional paid upgrades, priced in the booking flow Offsite Ads at 15%, or 12% once the shop has made $10,000 in the prior 365 days — and at that point participation becomes compulsory for the shop’s lifetime, capped at $100 per order
Buyer-side cost Postage plus buyer protection from €1.99 or 4.5% Whatever you charge for postage

An illustration an Austrian seller can check against their own statements. A EUR shop with a EUR bank account, no VAT ID on file, selling a €50 item with €5 postage — a €55 order. The transaction fee is 6.5% of €55, so €3.58. Processing is 4% of €55 plus €0.30, so €2.50. That is about €6.08 before the listing fee, before Austrian USt on those fees, and before Offsite Ads if the sale is attributed to one. The arithmetic is ours; the rates are Etsy’s.

Offsite Ads is the component to watch. Below $10,000 in trailing-year sales you can opt out. At $10,000 you cannot — and Etsy is explicit that if you opted out before crossing the threshold, you will be required to participate at 12% on attributed orders for the lifetime of the shop.

Two things that favour an Austrian shop

It is not all one way, and both of these are checkable.

Austria pays no Regulatory Operating fee. Etsy charges one in a specific list of countries: Canada at 0.50%, France 1.14%, Hungary 1.97%, Italy 0.80%, India 0.05%, Spain 0.88%, Türkiye 1.67%, the United Kingdom 0.48% and Vietnam 1.24%. Austria is not on it. An Austrian shop is structurally about half a per cent cheaper to run than the same shop in Spain, and more than a per cent cheaper than one in France.

You can avoid the conversion fee entirely. Etsy charges 2.5% if your listing currency differs from your payment-account currency, and its own advice is to list in the same currency as your payment account. Set the shop to EUR on day one. Leave the default in place and you are paying 2.5% on every sale for nothing — Etsy’s default shop currency, if you never choose one, is US dollars.

PayLivery stops at the border

willhaben’s shipping is genuinely good and genuinely local. The buyer pays online, willhaben holds the money, and you get a print-at-home label or a QR code for the Post counter within moments. Business-customer tariffs apply, from a €4.40 Post Versandtasche up to 2 kg to Post L at €9.90 up to 31.5 kg, with Hermes and DPD alternatives from €5.60; parcels are insured to around €500. You ship within seven days or the buyer is refunded.

None of it crosses the border. willhaben states it plainly: “Versand ist nur innerhalb Österreichs möglich!” PayLivery also caps at €1,999.99 per item, is for private individuals only, and does not permit an in-person handover.

Etsy Payments is available in Austria and is mandatory where available; your bank country becomes your shop country and cannot be changed later except within the eurozone. New sellers are paid weekly on Mondays, with deposits credited within about five business days, a €20 daily minimum and a possible payment account reserve while you have no track record. Set against PayLivery’s 48 hours after delivery, that is a real change of cash rhythm.

Etsy gives you none of the shipping side either. Etsy’s own words: “We offer shipping labels for sellers in Australia, Canada, the UK, and the US.” Austria is not on that list. You rate the parcel yourself, buy the postage yourself from Österreichische Post or a private carrier, and enter the tracking by hand.

Two further wrinkles matter right now. Etsy’s Seller Policy requires that orders shipped to the United States use a Delivered Duty Paid method, and makes the seller liable for “any unexpected costs incurred by the buyer after the completion of the transaction, such as customs duties or import fees” where a DDP method was required and not used. With no Etsy-supplied Austrian label, sourcing a compliant DDP service to the US is your problem. And Etsy has posted live disruptions: since 1 July 2026 Canada Post and USPS labels have been temporarily unavailable for certain EU destinations because of a new EU handling fee, and US-bound labels through Evri, Australia Post and Canada Post are suspended.

On intra-EU sales, one common myth is worth killing. You do not need IOSS to sell from Austria into Germany. IOSS covers import distance sales up to €150 into the EU. Selling within the EU, the relevant regime is EU-OSS, and Austria’s business portal sets out the micro-enterprise simplification: below €10,000 of combined intra-Community distance sales and services in a year, you tax in the country the goods are dispatched from. Above it, you tax in the destination country and declare through EU-OSS. The old per-country Lieferschwelle was abolished on 1 July 2021.

What a willhaben ad carries and what Etsy asks for

A willhaben Marktplatz ad is more structured than a classified usually is, and that helps.

willhaben field Etsy Transfer Notes
Titel Title Rewrite German to English, and Etsy search is keyword matching. A German title on an English query does not surface.
Beschreibung Description Rewrite This is also where the age and provenance claim gets written, because willhaben has no field for it.
Zustand — NEU, NEUWERTIG, GEBRAUCHT, DEFEKT Reframe Etsy has no equivalent scale for vintage. Put the condition in the description and be specific about wear.
Marke, Größe, Schuhgröße, Hosenweite Description or variations Mapped willhaben carries these as facets on Mode; Etsy wants the designer named in the vintage documentation. Only relevant on the small slice of genuinely vintage clothing that is eligible.
Farbe (16 fixed values) Attribute Direct Mehrfarbig, Schwarz, Braun, Blau, Türkis and so on map cleanly.
Photos Photos Direct willhaben allows an unlimited number, up to 6 MB and 8000×8000 px each, first image as cover.
Kategorie Category Mapped See the table above. This is the eligibility decision, not a taxonomy exercise.
Age / who made it / when it was made New No willhaben equivalent. This is the field that decides whether the listing survives.
Materials New Etsy may ask about materials when checking a vintage claim.

One thing carries across better than sellers expect. willhaben already forbids stock imagery — “Füge nur eigene Bilder/Fotos hinzu (keine Symbolfotos/Bilder aus dem Internet)” — and Etsy requires the same, “your own photographs or video content… not stock photos”, and for handpicked items “photo or video content of the real, final product”. If you have been listing properly on willhaben, your photography already clears Etsy’s bar.

DPMG, Kleinunternehmer and being seen

Both platforms report to the Austrian tax authorities, and moving stock between them changes how much of your activity is visible.

The DAC7 directive is implemented in Austria by the Digitale Plattformen-Meldepflichtgesetz, BGBl. I Nr. 108/2022, in force since 1 January 2023. Both platforms describe the same thresholds: 30 or more transactions in a calendar year, or proceeds above €2,000, reported by 31 January for the previous year.

The asymmetry is the interesting part. willhaben counts only PayLivery transactions, so a cash handover is invisible to it. Every Etsy sale runs through Etsy Payments and counts. A seller who has stayed under the line on willhaben for years can cross it in their first Etsy year without changing anything.

Two things are widely muddled. willhaben says it plainly: “Es ist also nur eine Meldeverpflichtung und keine Steuer-Abfuhrverpflichtung” — a reporting obligation, not an obligation to pay tax, and hitting the threshold does not automatically create a liability. Separately, Etsy is required by Austrian law to report gross sales and tax ID details to the Austrian authorities, which is a different regime from DAC7.

On the Kleinunternehmerregelung, the limit has been €55,000 gross a year since 1 January 2025, with a 10% tolerance band. Note the interaction: a Kleinunternehmer has no VAT ID, and without one on file Etsy charges Austrian USt on its seller fees. Staying under the threshold has a small, quantifiable cost here. None of this replaces a Steuerberater.

How to crosslist with FLUF Connect

  1. Connect willhaben in FLUF Connect and import your Marktplatz ads — photos, prices, categories and attributes — into one catalogue.
  2. Connect Etsy, and before you push anything, set the shop currency to EUR and file your VAT ID if you have one. Both decisions are cheaper to make on day one than to correct later.
  3. Filter hard. Work down the table above and keep only Antiquitäten, Sammelobjekte, old Bücher, vintage Musik, Basteln, and any genuinely 20+-year-old furniture or clothing. On a typical willhaben catalogue this is a small fraction of the ads.
  4. Write the age claim for every vintage item — what it is, roughly when it was made, and how you know. Etsy can ask.
  5. Rewrite in English — title, description, materials — and keep the German original live on willhaben, where it is doing its job.
  6. Sort out postage before the first sale. You buy your own labels, and US orders need a DDP method.
  7. Push, then run both from one dashboard.

What syncs between them

Event What happens
An item sells on Etsy Etsy order sync brings the sale into FLUF Connect and the item is marked sold so it stops being offered elsewhere.
An Etsy listing hits its four-month expiry Relisting is supported on the Etsy side and is included in every plan. This is the one that quietly costs money if left unmanaged.
An item sells on willhaben Close it in FLUF Connect so it comes down on Etsy. Everything in a second-hand catalogue is one of one.
A willhaben ad expires after 45 days willhaben ads and Etsy listings run on different clocks. Manage the Etsy side, which is the one with a fee attached.
You edit a price Change it once. Remember Etsy’s price has to absorb 6.5% plus processing plus, potentially, an ad fee — willhaben’s did not.

What it costs

FLUF Connect is £1 for 7 days, then plans from £9/month on Starter, with no cap on how much you list. There is no free plan.

Relisting, offers and bulk operations are included in every plan rather than sold as add-ons. On this route relisting is the one that pays for itself: Etsy’s four-month expiry is an operating cost, and the eligible seam of a willhaben catalogue is usually small enough that Starter covers it comfortably.

Sources and verification

Checked against primary sources on 26 August 2026. willhaben’s German-language help centre was read directly and is quoted in the original with translations; Etsy’s legal and help pages were read from Etsy’s own published text.

Where a figure could not be traced to the organisation that sets it, this page leaves it out: willhaben’s character limits, the prices of its paid ad upgrades, Etsy’s Austrian shop set-up fee, and which carrier Austrian Etsy sellers actually use. willhaben’s own help centre also gives three different ad durations in three live articles — 45 days, 30 days and 180 days — so check that one in your own account.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, and it is not close. Etsy names “resold clothing that is ready-to-use as-is, without further crafting” as not qualifying, along with electronics, generic cooking tools, gardening and home DIY supplies, cosmetics and vehicle parts. Damenmode alone carries roughly 1.8 million willhaben ads and almost none of it travels. What does travel is Antiquitäten und Kunst, Sammelobjekte, old Bücher, vintage Musik and the Basteln und Handarbeit seam.

Items that are 20 or more years old, personally curated or collected by the seller — so, in 2026, made in 2006 or earlier. Etsy may ask for further photo documentation or information about the source, age, designer or materials. A willhaben ad has no field for a year of manufacture, so that claim has to be written at crosslist time and it has to be defensible.

A private Marktplatz ad is free and runs 45 days with an unlimited number of images, and PayLivery is free to the seller — willhaben's own wording is “völlig kostenlos”. The buyer pays the postage and the buyer pays the protection fee, which starts at €1.99 or 4.5% of the item price depending on category. Etsy, by contrast, charges $0.20 per listing whether or not it sells, 6.5% including postage, and 4% plus €0.30 processing.

Slightly, and it is checkable. Etsy charges a Regulatory Operating fee in Canada, France, Hungary, Italy, India, Spain, Türkiye, the United Kingdom and Vietnam. Austria is not on the list. An Austrian shop also pays no currency conversion fee provided the shop currency is set to EUR to match a EUR bank account — leave the default in place and Etsy bills in US dollars and takes 2.5% on every sale.

No. PayLivery is Austria-only — willhaben states “Versand ist nur innerhalb Österreichs möglich!” — capped at €1,999.99 per item, and restricted to private individuals with no in-person handover. Etsy does not sell shipping labels in Austria either; it offers them in Australia, Canada, the UK and the US only. You buy your own postage and enter the tracking by hand.

Etsy's Seller Policy requires US-bound orders to be sent Delivered Duty Paid, and holds the seller liable for unexpected customs or import charges a buyer is billed where a DDP method was required and not used. Since Etsy sells no Austrian labels, sourcing a compliant DDP service is your responsibility. Etsy has also posted temporary suspensions on US-bound labels through several carriers, so check the current position before you promise a delivery date.

No. IOSS covers import distance sales into the EU up to €150. Selling from Austria into another EU country is intra-Community distance selling, handled under EU-OSS. Austria's business portal sets out a micro-enterprise simplification: below €10,000 of combined intra-Community distance sales and services a year you tax where the goods are dispatched from; above it you tax in the destination country and declare through EU-OSS.

More visible, yes. Both platforms report under the same DAC7 thresholds — 30 or more transactions in a calendar year, or proceeds above €2,000 — implemented in Austria by the Digitale Plattformen-Meldepflichtgesetz. But willhaben counts only PayLivery transactions, so a cash handover is invisible to it, whereas every Etsy sale runs through Etsy Payments and counts. willhaben is clear that reaching the threshold is a reporting obligation, not automatically a tax liability. None of this replaces advice from a Steuerberater.

Etsy, plainly. Handmade is Etsy's protected first category under “made by a seller”, while willhaben's own rules push goods produced in Eigenproduktion — its examples are self-sewn face masks, biscuits, knitted and crocheted goods — out of the free private tier and into a commercial ad. If your work is handmade, this is less a crosslisting question than a relocation.

FLUF Connect plans start at £9/month on Starter, with Seller at £29/month and Pro at £99/month; every plan is unlimited on listings and marketplaces, and the tiers differ only by how often we check your channels for sales. There is no free plan. Relisting, offers and bulk operations are included in every plan rather than sold as add-ons — relisting matters here because Etsy listings expire after four months and cost $0.20 to renew.
