Key Takeaways

  • This route is for UK retailers on BigCommerce who want OnBuy as an extra marketplace for new, barcoded stock.
  • BigCommerce includes its own Amazon, eBay and Walmart integrations. OnBuy is not one of them, which is where FLUF Connect fits.
  • Sales work in both directions with one manual step. A store order ends the OnBuy listing for you. An OnBuy order is marked sold in FLUF, which then ends the product in your store.
  • OnBuy charges an application fee, a monthly subscription and a sales fee by category, and pays out on its own timetable.
  • Try it with 7 days for £1, then from £9/month.

Is OnBuy worth adding to a BigCommerce store?

BigCommerce retailers tend to run a real catalogue: hundreds or thousands of products, a stock room, and often trade customers alongside retail ones. OnBuy is a UK marketplace where each product has one page and every seller of it competes on price and delivery. That suits branded goods you can restock. It does not suit made-to-order, bespoke or second-hand lines, and OnBuy’s terms describe sellers as businesses, so it is a channel for a trading company rather than a side project.

The question is whether OnBuy’s buyers are worth a subscription on top of the one you already pay BigCommerce. If you have lines that sell steadily and a margin that can carry a marketplace fee, it usually is. If most of your range is slow or low-margin, test OnBuy with your top sellers first.

How this sits with your BigCommerce plan

BigCommerce’s UK pricing ties each plan to your online sales over the last 12 months. Core is £29 a month on annual billing, or £39 monthly, for up to $30K. Growth is £79 or £105 for up to $100K. Scale is £299 or £399, with 0.9% charged on sales above its monthly cap. Core and Growth upgrade automatically when you pass the limit.

BigCommerce says orders from its native eBay and Amazon integrations count toward those limits. OnBuy is not a native BigCommerce integration, so ask BigCommerce how it treats your OnBuy turnover if you are near a threshold.

What OnBuy costs

OnBuy’s seller terms set out the charges. The application fee is non-refundable, and if you are accepted it pays your first month’s subscription. From then on the subscription is taken monthly in advance. Each order pays a sales fee, a category percentage of the listing price plus delivery. Refunds give you back that share of the sales fee, minus a refund administration fee of 20% of it, at least 25p and at most £5 a line.

Work out each line’s margin with your own figures. Take a £45 order including delivery in a category with a 12% sales fee. OnBuy keeps £5.40. If you later refund it in full, OnBuy returns the £5.40 and charges £1.08 for handling the refund. Find your real category rate in your OnBuy seller account before you set prices.

Barcodes and product pages

Because OnBuy shares one page between all sellers of a product, the barcode is what places your offer. Before you list a range, check that each size and colour you want to sell has its own barcode in BigCommerce. Lines with no barcodes, or one code shared across every variant, need tidying first. Your supplier or GS1 UK can help if codes are missing.

Under OnBuy’s terms you can create a product page or add your offer to an existing one. If another seller already uses the page and you want its details changed, you request it from OnBuy, and OnBuy can say no. So your own product copy matters most on the pages you create.

Dispatch and payouts

You set a handling time of up to 10 days and a delivery timeframe of 1 to 30 days, and each order must leave within the handling time. Priority orders placed before your cut-off go the same day. An order not marked dispatched within 30 days is cancelled and refunded.

You can request a withdrawal no later than 7 days after an order’s delivery timeframe ends, and OnBuy starts the payout by the end of the next business day. Marketplace money therefore arrives later than card payments in your store, so plan stock purchases with that gap in mind.

How to crosslist from BigCommerce to OnBuy

  1. Connect your BigCommerce store to FLUF Connect.
  2. Connect OnBuy with your OnBuy seller account details.
  3. Choose the products, starting with barcoded lines you hold in depth.
  4. Set OnBuy prices that carry the category sales fee.
  5. Review each listing and publish it to OnBuy.

When something sells

FLUF sees BigCommerce orders, so a sale in your store ends the OnBuy listing without any action from you. FLUF does not detect OnBuy orders. When one arrives, mark the item sold in FLUF as you process it. FLUF then ends the product in your BigCommerce store and on any other channel it can end. On lines with plenty of stock this can wait for your end-of-day routine. On a last unit, do it straight away.
