eBay vs Marktplaats: Fees, Shipping and Payouts for Dutch Sellers

What eBay.nl’s 11% commission buys you against Marktplaats’ free ads and domestic parcel service, with a worked example in euros.

Key Takeaways

  • Private sellers on eBay.nl pay 11% of the total sale plus €0.35 per order and a 0.42% regulatory fee. Marktplaats takes no commission, and many categories cost nothing to post in.
  • Marktplaats parcels go through PostNL, DHL, Budbee or Brenger, and the buyer pays the postage. The programme does not send to or from other countries.
  • eBay.nl adds no international fee for buyers in the eurozone and Sweden, so a Dutch listing can sell to Germany, Belgium or France at the domestic rate.
  • A Marktplaats Pro account needs a KvK and btw number. eBay.nl has a separate fee table for business sellers, quoted excluding VAT.
  • FLUF Connect ends the listing on one site when the item sells on the other. Relisting on both, and eBay offers, come with the plans above Starter.

If you sell from the Netherlands, the choice between eBay and Marktplaats comes down to two questions. Where does your buyer live, and can you afford a commission? Marktplaats is the cheaper place to sell to someone in Utrecht or Groningen. Its own shipping service stops at the Dutch border, though. eBay.nl charges you on every sale, and in return a buyer in Lyon or Vienna pays the same fee rate as a buyer in Haarlem. Many resellers use both and let the item decide.

What a sale costs you on each site

eBay.nl for private sellers

The eBay.nl fee page for private sellers sets the verkoopcommissie at 11% of the total sale up to €1,990, and 2% on the part above that. The fixed charge per order is €0.05 when the order is under €10, and €0.35 otherwise. A regulatory operating fee of 0.42% sits on top. These private-seller figures include Dutch btw.

“Total sale” means the item price plus the postage the buyer picks, plus taxes. Free postage lowers your fee base, which matters when parcels cost €5 or more. You get up to 150 listings a month without an insertion fee, and each extra one costs €0.35, on the same page. Adding a subtitle costs €0.50 and a second category €0.35. A bold title, a scheduled start and up to 24 photos cost nothing. One rule catches sellers who come from classifieds: if you swap phone numbers or e-mail addresses to finish a deal outside eBay, eBay still charges the commission, based on the highest price in the listing.

eBay.nl for business sellers

Once you register as a business, a different table applies. The eBay.nl business fee page lists 11% up to €990 per item and 2% above that for most categories, with some categories on lower rates. The per-order charge is €0.35 for orders of €10 or less and €0.45 above. The regulatory fee is 0.35%, and every figure on that page excludes btw.

Marktplaats

Marktplaats does not take a percentage of what you sell for. Its help page on ad costs says many categories are free to post in, while some charge per advertisement. When a category is paid, the form shows “Dit is een betaalde categorie” (this is a paid category) at the top. If you do not see that line, posting is free. Business users can also hit a limit on how many free ads they keep live at once in some categories. Adding your website to an ad costs extra, and the price varies by category.

Where money does change hands is the buyer’s side. A Betaalverzoek carries a fixed €0.40 service charge, which the buyer pays on top of the agreed price. You can take it off your price if you prefer to absorb it. Kopersbescherming costs the buyer a percentage of the asking price, at least €0.59 and at most €20.

A worked example: a €60 jacket posted in the Netherlands

  • eBay.nl, private seller, postage included in the price: 11% of €60 is €6.60, plus €0.35 per order, plus 0.42% (€0.25). You receive €52.80 and still pay for the parcel yourself.
  • Marktplaats, free category, sent with PostNL through Verzenden via Marktplaats: you receive the full €60. The buyer pays the postage, the protection fee and, where it applies, the €0.40 service charge.

The gap grows with the price. A €400 lamp costs a private eBay.nl seller about €46 in fees on the rates above. On Marktplaats the seller still keeps €400. Above €1,990 the rate drops to 2% on the excess. A €2,500 camera body works out at €218.90 on the first €1,990, €10.20 on the remaining €510, €0.35 per order and €10.50 regulatory fee: €239.95 in total. So the only reason to pay eBay’s commission is a buyer you would not reach otherwise.

When the money reaches your bank

eBay pays sales into a bank account, and PayPal cannot receive eBay payouts. Funds usually show as available two days after the buyer’s payment is confirmed. Your bank then takes one or two working days. You can pick a daily, weekly, fortnightly or monthly payout. Weekly and fortnightly payouts go out on Tuesdays, and monthly ones on the first Tuesday. eBay takes its selling fees out of your proceeds before the transfer.

On Marktplaats a plain Betaalverzoek is run by Online Payment Platform (OPP), a payment firm licensed by De Nederlandsche Bank. Marktplaats says the seller gets the money by 18:00 on the next working day, as long as a bank account is linked. Betaalverzoeken cannot be used in the car category or on Pro ads.

A sale with Kopersbescherming is slower. OPP holds the payment until the parcel arrives, then gives the buyer 48 hours to check it. If the buyer does nothing, OPP releases the money 48 hours after delivery. If tracking never updates, the payment is released 14 days after the buyer paid. You also have 72 hours after payment to activate the shipment, or the sale is cancelled.

Posting parcels from the Netherlands

Verzenden via Marktplaats works with four carriers. PostNL sends you a label, DHL sends a QR code, and Budbee gives you an 8-digit code to open a parcel locker. Budbee only works if a locker exists within 35 kilometres of your address. Brenger collects large items from your address and delivers them to the buyer. The same page lists when you cannot use the service: shipments to or from abroad, parcels too large for the carrier, and categories where it is switched off. Kopersbescherming applies by default to these shipments, except in some categories. It always applies to Direct Kopen (buy now) purchases and cannot be switched off there.

The buyer pays the postage inside the Betaalverzoek, so you do not pay it upfront. Current prices from the Marktplaats shipping cost page:

Carrier and service Size or weight Price
Budbee locker to locker Extra Small to Large, max 20 kg €2.59 to €4.99
DHL to a pickup point Up to 3 kg / 10 kg / 20 kg €3.99 / €4.29 / €5.99
PostNL to a pickup point Small up to 3 kg / 10 kg / 23 kg €4.99 / €5.29 / €6.99
PostNL or DHL letterbox parcel 38 x 26.5 x 3.2 cm €4.40
Brenger kerbside delivery Up to 200 kg Quoted at checkout by distance and size

On eBay.nl you arrange postage yourself. The cross-border cost sits in the fee table instead. With a Dutch registration address, eBay charges no international fee for delivery inside the eurozone and Sweden. Other regions carry a fee between 1.45% and 3.99% of the total sale. A Dutch collector of vinyl, camera lenses or trading cards can therefore sell to Germany, Belgium, France, Italy or Spain at the same fee rate as a sale in Rotterdam.

Paying to be seen

New ads push older ones down each Marktplaats category. The help page on promotion options describes three fixes. Omhoogbellen means phoning 0900 41 11 111 from a Dutch number, at €1.90 per call, to move your ad back up. Omhoogplaatsen does the same from Mijn Advertenties (My Ads), paid with iDEAL | Wero or PayPal, and is the option for sellers living in Belgium. Both effects wear off as new ads arrive. A Dagtopper holds your ad above the normal listings for 1, 3 or 7 days, and its price depends on the category and period.

On eBay.nl the paid extras are listing upgrades, and a shop subscription lowers insertion costs for bigger ranges. An eBay Basiswinkel costs €19.95 a month with 250 listings included, then €0.15 per fixed-price listing and €0.35 per auction. Commission still applies to each sale.

Selling as a business on each site

Marktplaats business advertisers use a Pro account. Marktplaats Zakelijk asks for a company name, KvK number, btw number, contact details and invoice details. Checking usually takes less than one working day, and opening the account costs nothing. Pro ads run on a budget and a cost per click that you set. Kopersbescherming and Betaalverzoeken are not available on Pro ads.

On eBay.nl the main change for a business seller is the fee table described above, where prices exclude btw and the commission band tops out at €990 per item.

Buyers in Belgium

Marktplaats is a Dutch site. Its owner lists 2dehands/2ememain as the Belgian market leader in online classifieds, a separate brand for Belgian buyers. eBay.nl, by contrast, reaches Belgian buyers under the eurozone rule above, with no international fee.

Which of your items suit which site

Put an item on eBay.nl when:

  • the likely buyer could be anywhere in the eurozone, such as a collectible, a spare part or a niche brand;
  • it fits a parcel, so postage is small against the price;
  • you want offers and a checkout without chatting over price in messages.

Put it on Marktplaats when:

  • the buyer is almost certainly Dutch, as with a bike, a cot or a garden set;
  • it is too big for a letterbox or locker and Brenger or collection makes more sense;
  • the margin is thin and 11% would eat most of it.

Anything that sits in the overlap, such as a branded jacket or a games console, can go on both.

Listing on eBay and Marktplaats together with FLUF Connect

Yes. eBay.nl publishes its own fee tables. A private seller pays 11% of the total sale up to €1,990, plus €0.35 per order (€0.05 under €10) and a 0.42% regulatory fee, all including btw. Business sellers have a separate table quoted excluding btw.

Marktplaats takes no cut of the sale price. Many categories cost nothing to post in, some charge per ad, and promotion such as a Dagtopper is optional. On a Betaalverzoek the buyer pays a €0.40 service charge, and Kopersbescherming costs the buyer between €0.59 and €20.

Not through Verzenden via Marktplaats, which excludes shipments to or from abroad. You would have to agree your own postage with the buyer. On eBay.nl, a Dutch seller pays no international fee for delivery inside the eurozone and Sweden.
