Why an Austrian Vinted seller should also be on willhaben

They are strong at opposite things

Vinted arrived in Austria in 2024 and grew quickly among people selling clothes. willhaben has been the country’s default marketplace since 2006 and carries roughly 12.5 million live Marktplatz ads — but Austrians repeatedly report that it is the one category where willhaben underperforms. A seller in r/wien put it exactly:

“Keine Käufer. Auf Willhaben zB. hab ich anderweitig schon sehr viel verkauft aber Kleidung scheint dort gar nicht zu funktionieren.”

“No buyers. On willhaben, for instance, I’ve sold plenty of other things, but clothing just doesn’t seem to work there at all.”

That reads like an argument against this page. It is not, for two reasons. First, willhaben’s fashion category is enormous in absolute terms — 2,398,919 live ads across Mode und Accessoires, of which more than 1.75 million are womenswear. A category can be someone’s weakest and still be one of the largest fashion inventories in the country. Second, the complaint is about competition and discovery, not absence of demand — which is precisely what a free additional listing is for.

The reverse is also true and worth being honest about. Austrians told each other the same thing from the other direction in April 2026:

“Kleiner Tipp; stell deine Sachen gleichzeitig auch auf Vinted rein, dann hast du eine größere Reichweite.”

“Little tip: put your things on Vinted at the same time, then you have a bigger reach.”

Running both is already the folk wisdom. This page is about doing it without typing everything twice.

Different buyer behaviour, genuinely

willhaben grew out of classifieds, and a large share of its transactions are still local pickup with cash. That brings the well-documented Austrian marketplace experience — haggling, and no-shows. It also means a reputational quirk worth knowing: willhaben ratings only exist for PayLivery transactions. A seller who only ever does local handover accumulates no rating at all, however many items they shift.

Vinted, by contrast, is shipping-first with an integrated escrow, and since April 2026 Austrian members can also trade with Germany, on top of the existing France and Italy connections. So the honest framing is: Vinted gives your item more countries, willhaben gives it more Austrians.

Two rules that will get your ad pulled

This is the section that saves you a suspension, and almost no crosslisting guide mentions it.

Rule one — ads must be in German. willhaben’s Anzeigenrichtlinien state it flatly: “Inserate müssen in deutscher Sprache veröffentlicht werden.” English may be appended as a translation, but other languages are not permitted, and HTML tags are banned in the description. A Vinted seller who writes their listings in English — extremely common, since Vinted is cross-border by design — cannot simply copy that text across.

Rule two — no pointing at your other shops. The same policy states: “Ebenso ist der Verweis auf ein Benutzer-Profil bei einer anderweitigen Website (z.B. anderweitige Verkaufsplattform) unzulässig.” Links, email addresses and QR codes are out too. If your Vinted description ends with “check out my other items on Vinted” or carries a shop URL, that ad is a removal waiting to happen.

There is a third rule that decides how long you can stay a private seller at all. willhaben reclassifies anyone listing “regelmäßig bzw. in hohem Volumen oder mit Gewinnabsicht” as a commercial seller regardless of whether they hold a trade licence — so the free unlimited private listing is not a loophole to scale into. One account per person, too; extra accounts are deactivated without warning.

The money — and why nobody is undercutting anybody

If you came here expecting a fee-saving argument, there isn’t one, and pages that manufacture one are wrong.

Both marketplaces take nothing from the seller. The differences that actually matter are reach, effort and shipping — not price. On a €45 jacket, a willhaben buyer pays roughly €2.03 in Käuferschutz plus postage; a Vinted buyer pays a comparable protection fee plus postage. You receive the full asking price either way.

One practical constraint on the willhaben side: PayLivery is domestic only. willhaben’s help centre states that shipping across Austria’s borders via PayLivery is “grundsätzlich nicht möglich”, and the carriers ship only within Austria. If cross-border sales are a meaningful part of your Vinted income, willhaben does not replace them.

How to crosslist from Vinted to willhaben with FLUF Connect

1. Sign in to FLUF Connect and open the Channels page.
2. Connect Vinted. Vinted needs the FLUF browser extension installed and signed in throughout — its listings cannot be created from a server.
3. Connect willhaben. The extension captures one long-lived identity credential at connect. After that, every listing action runs entirely server-side: creating ads, uploading images, editing prices and deleting all round-trip from our servers with no browser involved.
4. Import your Vinted wardrobe.
5. Check the description. German language, no links, no references to other platforms.
6. Review the category and condition. willhaben’s taxonomy runs up to four levels deep and its condition vocabulary has exactly four values.
7. Publish. The ad runs for 45 days.

That asymmetry is unusual and worth understanding: Vinted is the platform that needs your browser open, willhaben is not. Once connected, willhaben work continues while your machine is off.

What transfers — field and category mapping

The category identity has a subtlety we learned the expensive way. willhaben exposes an ad through two different paths that return different category information — one gives a full root-to-leaf chain, the other gives only a symbolic code and no chain at all. Letting a category name come from either path made the same ad resolve to two different category identities depending on which path last read it, which quietly burned a second AI mapping call for a category already mapped. So the name is deliberately left empty and identity is keyed on the id alone.

What syncs — and the one thing we refuse to guess

Most tools would present that as a limitation and move on. It is worth explaining, because it is a deliberate choice rather than an unfinished one.

The obvious way to detect a willhaben sale is to watch the public index and treat an ad’s disappearance as a sale. On willhaben that inference is dangerous, because ads expire after roughly six weeks by design — a live sample published on 29 July carried an end date of 12 September. Disappearance therefore overwhelmingly means expired, not sold. Wiring sold-sync to that signal would mass-delist perfectly good stock on every other channel you sell through, every six weeks, forever. We would rather tell you the feature is off than ship one that quietly destroys your inventory. It stays off until a real PayLivery sale body can be read directly.

What that means for you day to day: when something sells on either side, mark it sold in FLUF Connect. That single action fans out everywhere else. It is the same habit good multichannel sellers already have.

The 45-day clock, and the trap in beating it

A free private Marktplatz ad runs for 45 days. It cannot be extended before it expires, and expired ads keep their images for only two to three months before those are deleted too. The obvious response — delete and re-post to get back to the top — is exactly what willhaben prohibits.

The Anzeigenrichtlinien forbid deleting and re-posting an active ad, reject a re-post within 30 days of deletion without refund, and reserve the right to demote every one of a repeat offender’s ads. Separately, willhaben has changed re-publishing so that it no longer resets your date-sort position. There is no clever loophole here, and a tool that offered you one would be walking you into a penalty.

There is one more trap specific to this platform, and it cost a real seller a real listing during our integration work. willhaben exposes an endpoint that looks like it duplicates an ad. It does not duplicate — it migrates the ad, and the source ceases to exist. Any relist on willhaben must therefore be create-new-then-delete-old, never a copy. That is how ours works.

Before and after — the real workflow

Doing it by hand

1. Open willhaben, start a new Marktplatz ad
2. Rewrite the description in German, stripping any link, email or mention of another platform
3. Re-upload photos and pick a cover image
4. Find the category by walking a tree up to four levels deep
5. Pick one of the four Zustand values, choose a handover method, re-enter the price
6. Publish, then diarise the 45-day expiry
7. Watch both platforms and delist by hand the moment either sells

The last two lines are where the time actually goes. Vinted completes purchases instantly without asking you to confirm, so any delay in taking the willhaben ad down is a window in which the same garment can be promised twice — and on willhaben that means an in-person no-show you have to explain.

About half a minute per item once your defaults are set. The description check is the step worth keeping a human eye on, because it is the one that carries a removal risk rather than merely a formatting cost.
